WBA SUPER FEATHERWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP
YODSANAN NANTHACHAI VS. VICENTE MOSQUERA

Vicente Mosquera became the second Panamanaian world champion in as many days. Mosquera captured the WBA Super Featherweight belt in a unanimous decision win over champion Yodsanan Nanthachai (3-K Battery) in the Toney-Ruiz undercard. The official scorers saw it 116-11, 115-112 and 118-108.

Yodsanan Nanthachai had won 37 straight fights, and was undefeated since 1994. Obviously disappointed over the loss 3K Battery said, “The plan was to knock him out (Mosquera), but I got caught and knocked in the first round and it changed everything.  I thought I was going to knock him out after I knocked him down in the third round.  I wasn’t expecting him to recover that quickly."

Mosquera also became the first Panamanian to win a world title in Madison Square Garden in almost 22 years.  Roberto Duran accomplished the feat in June 16, 1983 with an impressive upset TKO8 victory over WBA junior middleweight champion Davey Moore.

After the bout and before the decision was announced, Mosquera went to his knees and started crying, thinking about his father who had passed away two years ago.

“It means a lot to me to win this fight because my father always thought I would be a world champion.  Not only did I achieve my dream tonight, I want to be a great champion that defends his title many times," he commented. “Nanthachai was a strong guy, lots of guts and a great champion.”

Next Panamanian in world title contention is Celestino 'Pelenchin' Caballero, who recently handed Golden Boy Promotions' hot prospect Daniel Ponce de Leon his only defeat. Caballero, a stylish boxer/puncher from Colón, Panama who was in Mosquera's corner for this fight, faces Jose Luis Valbuena in an IBF super bantamweight title eliminator this coming May 5th from Desert Diamond Casino in Tucson, Arizona.

The twenty-five year old Mosquera, who hails from Panama City, is trained by Francisco 'Tolete' Arroyo and managed by Rogelio Espiño. With the victory he boosts his record to 21-1-1, 10 KOs, while Nanthachai drops to 44-3-1, 36 KOs.
