WINKY WRIGHT: FINALLY ARRIVED! By Jeff Mayweather |
|

Saturday night was supposed to be a big fight; instead it became a glorified sparring session. Winky Wright gave Trinidad a boxing lesson. It was Boxing 101 from round one until round twelve. Trinidad had no answer whatsoever to what was in front of him fight night. He was badly beaten to the punch over and over again, and the jab controlled the fight throughout. Trinidad was made to look extremely ordinary, not the superstar that once shined so bright, and while he is far from finished, Tito was totally exposed by Wright who dominated the Puerto Rican fighter worst than De la Hoya or Hopkins over the duration. Trinidad was so outclassed it was hard to pick a round to give to him. Many people I talked to thought Winky was going to get knocked out. I never thought for once that would happen, although I thought the fight would be much closer, with Wright winning by a small margin. My philosophy is simple; the better and more talented fighter wins most of the time, the guy that can punch only has a puncher’s chance. Not just in this fight but in any fight. Where does Tito go from here? There are a few good fights left for him. I think Trinidad is far from finished, unlike what Roy Jones said about him putting so much pressure on his front foot. Trinidad has been that way from day one, he has the worst balance in all of boxing. Maybe tonight it showed even more but it had nothing to do with him being close to finished. I watch and listen to the commentary closely from fight to fight. When Trinidad beat Mayorga, Roy Jones Jr. had the most praise I’ve ever heard coming from him. When he said that the time off seemed to revitalize Tito and that was something that he hinted to about himself. Tito had horrible balance in that fight as well; it is just that he wasn't in with a boxer. Guys that come to fight Trinidad will easily find out how far from finished he is but an elite fighter with good boxing skills has a great chance of defeating him again. Two names come to mind right away when I think of the next move for Tito. Fernando Vargas and Ike Quartey, both will come to fight him and give him that chance to display how devastating his punching power still is. Quartey is a little better boxer than Vargas is, but he's not a boxer that uses the ring to his advantage. A rematch with him and/or Vargas would be huge. The selling point on him and Quartey is that when they both were at Welterweight for some reason the fight did not happen. Now that they are removed from that weight class the match can become a reality. Although Winky Wright decisively defeat Trinidad, he is still left with any real lucrative offers other than Trinidad in a rematch, which would be disastrous for Tito. There is Bernard Hopkins if he gets pass Taylor, that's a fight fans' fight, not a big money fight though, neither guy is a draw and it would be a Pay Per View flop. Once again a guy that is most important to Trinidad and Wright is Fernando Vargas; he's a huge attraction and can generate large Pay Per View revenue for everyone involved. Vargas may no longer possess the skills that made him a star but the fans still love him and are willing to spend top dollar to watch and see what he has left. If I were in charge of Winky Wright or Felix Trinidad, Fernando Vargas would be on my most wanted list. The boxing world must finally take its hat off to Mr. Ronald Winky Wright, it's been a long time coming, but he has finally arrived... 5-13-2005
