Well, there always comes a time for
the old to make room for the new, and on this Saturday night
that was exactly what happened right in front of my eyes. I
was fortunate enough to go to the fight and witness the
changing of the guard as Paul "The Punisher" Williams
thoroughly dominated Ronald "Winky" Wright.
The first round it appeared as though Winky was about to
take the youngster to school but the first round would be
the only round in which Winky even looked as though he
belonged in the same ring with Williams. Williams' punch
out put was way too high for Winky to deal with. Williams
forced Winky to come out of his shell and fight if he was
going to give himself any chance of winning,
Wright was out of
character as he had to fight even when he didn't want to
because Williams high volume of punches penetrated Winky's
defense, the defense that always appeared to be his
ace in the hole against all prior opponents. His defense
didn't fail him. Williams forced him out of his
defensive mode or take a one-sided beating for sure.
Wink decided to
take a chance; he had moments in the fight in which he
rocked Williams, but that has been the knock against Winky,
his entire career against elite fighters he may win but it
will certainly be by decision. Williams used his jab from
long range, something that I hadn't seen him do until
tonight.
Williams proved
that he belongs and can be mentioned along with all the top
fighters out there today. He took the torch from Winky
tonight and I'm sure he is going to hold on to it for a
while. Paul Williams is the kind of fighter that
boxing needs; a guy who is not afraid to get in with anyone
willing to sign a contract. I hope that doesn't change,
he's a breath of fresh air.
Winky Wright fought
gallantly and did nothing to spoil his reputation but in the
pre-fight interview he said he didn't know why Paul Williams
was the most feared fighter in boxing. He got a bitter taste
of Williams up close and personal, and I'm sure now he can
answer his own question. The long layoff I'm sure did
nothing to help Winky, who is getting close to the retiring
age for a fighter. He has had a great career and went out
like a true Champion.
I take my hat off
to him and my heart goes out to him but now his time has
come to pass the torch to a new force to be reckoned with in
the boxing world. His name is Paul "The Punisher" Williams.
