HIGHLIGHTS OF MAYWEATHER-MARQUEZ 24/7 EPISODE 3: MEXICAN FORTITUDE CONFRONTS AMERICAN SWAGGER... by Chris Robinson

Over the years HBO has been heavily criticized  for their selection of fights but very few can question that the network has consistently produced some of the finest documentaries and boxing related preview shows. HBO's "Countdown" and "24/7" series, both of which focus around an upcoming Pay Per View main event, have been well laid out and full of insight and behind the scenes coverage.
More of that coverage has been on display during the recent edition of Mayweather/Marquez 24/7. The most recent episode served as a telling illustration of just how stark the contrast in personalities is between the two combatants. In Mayweather we have a man who is completely sure of himself and who is willing to do anything to let the world know it without any hint of shame. Marquez' confidence is also very evident, but his demeanor is more humble and his modest attitude is polar opposite of Lil Floyd's.
After episode 3 more revelations rose to the surface and each man's family relationships, training camp, and more were on display. Here is a quick recap below of some of the highlights and lowlights of the most recent edition of Mayweather/Marquez 24/7.

PACQUIAO - MAYWEATHER NEEDS TO HAPPEN... by Kenny Perrault

It always comes down to the money; in the end money has knocked out more fights then we care to count. Mayweather has gone on record claming he doesn't need Pacquiao, Pacquiao needs him, adding he's the bigger draw. I have to disagree with both comments made.
Pacquiao has made a big name for himself without the help of Mayweather and if they were to fight, I'm willing to bet there will be more Pacquiao fans in the house than Mayweather fans. As for the fight itself, if it does happen and as of right now that's a big IF, I can see it playing out in so many different ways. The battle between trainers Roger Mayweather and Freddie Roach makes for a great sub plot in itself. With so many factors still in the way, this is a fight that needs to happen; not to save boxing but to treat the boxing fans who love the sport so much.

A TRAINER'S PERSPECTIVE: DON HOUSE LOOKS BACK TEN YEARS ON VEGAS CLASH WITH JUAN MANUEL MARQUEZ.... by Chris Robinson

In boxing there is no better way to get a close and intimate look at a fighter than when you are a top level trainer preparing your charge to do battle against the fighter of mention. When looking at the career of the great Juan Manuel Marquez, many have high praise but very few know the fighter from Mexico City like trainer Don House does.
Nearly ten years ago to this day, House was helping guide the career of then WBA Featherweight champion Freddie 'Lil' Hagler' Norwood as they prepared for an HBO televised encounter with Marquez. At the time Marquez had yet to make a huge impact in the sport but House knew what his team was getting into when assessing Marquez' potential as a fighter.

WHAT IF JUAN MANUEL MARQUEZ WINS?... by Kenny Perrault
September 19th marks an important date in boxing, the return of Floyd Mayweather Jr. the former or current Pound4Pound champion, (depending on who you ask).
Mayweather Jr. will be facing Juan Manuel Marquez, currently the second, or third man in line for the much coveted Pound 4 Pound crown, (again depending on who you ask). Many -if not most people- are predicting a Floyd Mayweather Jr. victory and most say it will come with ease. Hell, some would make you believe it will take both Marquez brothers in the ring to stop Pretty Boy Floyd, also known as Money Mayweather. But let's get real folks,  Juan Manuel Marquez is the real deal and has a chance to be the first to knock Floyd off his throne, (assuming you still believe he sits there).

JEFF MAYWEATHER GIVES AN HONEST TAKE ON HIS NEPHEW FLOYD... by Chris Robinson

The life and times of Floyd Mayweather have been well documented throughout the years. Talented and full of bravado, Mayweather has always found a way to remain relevant, whether he is scathed or praised. Throughout Floyd's well publicized ride there haven't been too many individuals who have gotten to know him from the inside out like his respected uncle Jeff.

A former fighter in his own right and an excellent trainer who helped guide Sultan Ibragimov to the WBO Heavyweight Championship in June of 2007, Jeff Mayweather is cut from a different clothe than the other Mayweathers. While uncle Roger, Floyd Sr. and lil' Floyd have always been quick to preach about their skills and talents as human beings, Jeff prefers to take a much more subdued approach and his humble nature has always been like a breath of fresh air.

HAS FLOYD MAYWEATHER DONE HIS HOMEWORK ON JUAN MANUEL MARQUEZ? ... by Ricky Ray Taylor
Many common folks in our fine sport don't know who JUAN MANUEL MARQUEZ, 50-4 {37 KOs} is - thus, the weightiness of his match-up with FLOYD MAYWEATHER (on September 19th) is de-valued.
Of course, it would be pretty tough not to know who "Pretty Boy Floyd MAYWEATHER" is -even after his absence from the ring for nearly two full years.
In fact, the only judge who has ever voted against MAYWEATHER winning a unanimous decision in a fight is Tom KACZMAREK, who gave a  ridiculous nod for DE LA HOYA in that fight.  Every judge in every one of Mayweather's fights has penciled him as the winner, every one that is except Kaczmarek in his ruling in the De La Hoya-Mayweather encounter.  -Makes no sense-

MAYWEATHER: "I'M JUST HAPPY TO BE BACK IN THE SPORT OF BOXING. MY TEAM IS READY. I'M READY. AND I'M JUST GOING TO GO OUT THERE AND PERFORM...."

That's why I'm saying that's why the fans got have tune in. I mean what you have to do is you have to - you have to really, really sit back, talk it over with your team and really come up with a very, very good game plan for a guy like this. He's a Mexican bulldog. He is going to come, he's going to counter punch. He's going to go to the body. And me, I have to be smart and intelligent and I'm pretty sure my Uncle Roger is going to have one hell of a game plan for me, one hell of a game plan. And September 19 I will be ready and I'm pretty sure he's going to be ready. And I want the fans to tune in. Every Saturday - I know this Saturday the second segment of 24/7. The first segment was unbelievable. Tune in this Saturday for the second segment and just check for the - for the local times. I think it comes on at 10:15 pm. So don't miss the fight September 19 and continue to tune in and watch 24/7 every Saturday.

"MONEY' MAYWEATHER AND HIS ARMORED TRUCK....By Tim Dahlberg/AP
Floyd Mayweather Jr. didn't bring the Rolls, which was probably a smart idea. Even in a town that celebrates the outlandish it tends to attract attention, especially from the police.

Instead, he showed up at the wheel of his own armored truck, with everything inside but bags of cash.
"I keep that in my bank, baby," Mayweather said, "even though my truck is bulletproof."

JUAN MANUEL MARQUEZ AND TRAINER "NACHO" BERISTAIN MEDIA CONFERENCE CALL TRANSCRIPT...
Juan Manuel Marquez: Well the strategy is that you have use to counter the speed, the youth and the bigger fighters is the strategy that I've always used in my fights...a lot of intelligence and a lot of the skill is what has brought me to where I'm at today. And to answer the second question, we've maintained work and speed at the same time. When I finish sparring sessions with the bigger gloves, I take them off and I put on the lighter gloves to work on speed. So throughout camp that I've worked on speed so that we have that when it comes to fight night.

MAYWEATHER VS. MARQUEZ UNDERCARD CONFERENCE CALL TRANSCRIPT...
Antonio Diaz
: I'd like to thank everybody for making this possible. I am excited for this fight. When they told me I was fighting Zab Judah I was excited. Zab is a great fighter but it's a great opportunity for me to get back up there. I came back to boxing a year ago and I've been doing good. My body took the three year rest pretty well. I'm excited to go back in there - back in the ring and back in the spotlight.

MAYWEATHER vs MARQUEZ: THREE ELECTRIFYING FIGHTS ADDED INCLUDING TWO WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP FIGHTS SATURDAY, SEPT. 19 AT MGM GRAND LIVE ON HBO PPV...
It's the biggest and one of the most highly-anticipated boxing events of 2009, so there was no question that when it was time to compile the undercard of the Floyd "Money" Mayweather vs. Juan Manuel "Dinamita" Marquez super fight at MGM Grand in Las Vegas Saturday, Sept. 19, it was decided to bring out the big guns with three spectacular televised undercard bouts on HBO Pay-Per-View®, including two world championship fights.

In the chief support bout, unbeaten Chris John will defend his WBA Featherweight World Championship against one of the most courageous warriors in the game, 2000 Olympic Silver Medalist Rocky Juarez, in a rematch of their February 28, 2009 fight which is seen as one of 2009's most compelling battles thus far.  The WBO Interim Lightweight World Championship will be up for grabs on September 19 when Australian action hero and former Lightweight World Champion Michael Katsidis and 2004 U.S. Olympian and hot lightweight contender Vicente Escobedo collide in the ring in what looks like a can't-miss brawl.  Opening the HBO Pay-Per-View portion of the card will be a 10-round match up of welterweight veterans, as former Undisputed Welterweight World Champion Zab Judah takes on the always exciting banger, veteran Antonio Diaz.

"The Mayweather-Marquez fight card is definitely living up to the hype of Floyd's comeback," said Leonard Ellerbe, CEO of Mayweather Promotions.  "With three more excellent fights being shown on the telecast, fans are in for a great night of boxing from start to finish."

Floyd MAYWEATHER: "I know in my heart that Marquez is going to be at his best. He always comes out and performs to the best of his ability.
"I feel that my family bond is stronger if we stick together and I feel we're weak if we spread out.
"I'm going down in history as one of the best, one of the best of all time, if not the best."

Juan Manuel MARQUEZ:
"It's a very hard fight, but mentally I'm preparing myself to win and I feel I can beat Mayweather.
"Winning will be the gift of my life (Marquez celebrates his birthday August 23). The best gift of my life. I'm preparing myself and I'm putting all the ingredients together so I can beat Mayweather.
"I'm getting ready for the best Mayweather ever. I'm not thinking about his retirement. I'm getting ready for the best guy possible...the best fighter in the world."
