JAB OUR WAY TO VICTORY

By Jeff Mayweather

On Saturday night there will be more than Bernard Hopkins and Oscar de la Hoya taking center stage. The opening fight could possibly the most entertaining fight on the card. You have two extremely good fighters who are going to put it all on the line in a WBC Title Eliminator. The combatants will be Kofi Jantuah and Marco Antonio Rubio, both extremely good punchers, both needing this exposure to enhance their careers on one of the biggest cards in boxing history.

Not many people know about Kofi Jantuah... Well, that is where I come in, he's a hell of a fighter that puts in the work necessary to become World Champion one day. He holds a win over current WBO Champion Daniel Santos via fifth round TKO.

Rubio I don't know much about ,other than he must be able to punch. He has 23 KO's in 28 fights. His opposition has been extremely suspect but we can't underestimate him; between the two they have 40 KO's in a total 56 fights. So there should certainly be some fireworks on September 18th.

I can say that Kofi is definitely ready to step up to the challenge; he is in great shape and we have devised a plan to hopefully ensure my guy a victory. I have been riding Kofi really hard to use his jab, he could possibly have the best jab in the Jr. Middleweight division yet it still remains a mystery, for some reason he doesn't trust it, he says he gets bored with it. For some reason he likes to get in the trenches and mix it up even when it's not warranted. The entire camp and I are in agreement on what we want to see on fight night. Finally just the other day I got Jontuah to agree that the whole camp is right. I only hope that comes fight time he still believes in and embraces the team strategy.

It's strange because he is two totally different fighters when he employs his jab. It's a very effective weapon. Kofi's jab is equivalent to that of another African warrior, Ike Quartey. Yet it still goes unnoticed because he abandons it on fight night. Even with me not knowing much about the opposition I know that if Kofi utilizes the jab like I know he's capable of, we should emerge victorious.

Jontuah can punch with either hand already. What I would like to see is for him to let the jab dictate the pace of the fight, and also if Rubio is able to get under the jab, to get inside. We're cool with that as well because the right hand is what we want to land most to get the results we're hoping for.

The only sound opposition I'm aware of on Rubio's record is Fitz Vanderpool. It took Rubio twelve rounds to complete the mission and beating Vanderpool is something that in no way impresses me. The rest of his opposition has losing records.

I feel pretty good about our chances in this fight; to emerge victorious we must jab our way to victory.
