CHAT WITH BUDDY JUST WHAT DOCTOR ORDERED... by George Elsasser
Quickly
found Buddy the same class act he was before the celebrity that came with the
1991 title winner over Simon Brown - we both agreed Brown was one tough hombre.
And today it remains as it was … same style as before, even with the growing
recognition...
McCAIN'S BOXING REFORM BILL ON HOLD... by Oleg Bershadsky
Senator John McCain
remains boxing’s only real champion in the government. However, even someone
of Sen. McCain’s stature seems to be unable to bring about much needed reforms
in boxing. To me this can only mean one thing, that there is heavy opposition
to any substantial reforms by the shadowy figures who profit from the present
system.
BOXING PROMOTER ROBERT MITTLEMAN SENTENCED FOR FIXING FIGHTS
A boxing promoter who
arranged “fixed” fights and paid money to an undercover officer to
influence a federal prosecutor and judge, was sentenced to three years
probation and six months of home detention today for his guilty pleas to
felony bribery charges
JONES JR. vs THE 70'S AND 80'S...
by Jim Amato
This article
was first published after Roy's wins over Lou Del Valle and
Virgil Hill. This is what I thought about Roy then and my opinion
has not changed in light of his recent losses to Antonio Tarver
and Glencoffe Johnson. Rumor has it that Roy wants to meet the
winner of Tarver-Johnson II. I hope he changes his mind. If not,
I wish him well.
HOW ABOUT AN ELIMINATION TOURNEY?... by Jim
Amato
1967...Cassius Clay/Muhammad Ali is stripped of his
heavyweight title for refusing to be drafted into the U.S.
Armed Forces. In the blink of an eye the W.B.A. designated the
top eight contenders to fight off to determine a "new"
champion.
DWIGHT vs VANDER I: THE BEST CRUISERWEIGHT
FIGHT EVER?... by Jim Amato
The first fight between
defending champion Dwight Qawi and challenger
Evander Holyfield may have been the best cruiserweight bout since the
inception of that bastard division. That was back when championship
matches were REAL fights that were scheduled for 15 rounds. It was a brutal
give and take affair.
RAEPH'S CHRISTMAS STOCKING GIFT LIST (HO, HO, HO)
SUPER-SIX... by George Elsasser
Always look ahead to each
month’s USA Today in search of Danny Boy’s generous opinionated
offerings … hey, no other daily sports print scribbler gets the
space Raef baby does.... That’s the good news.
'BEST IN CHICAGO' BOXING: READY FOR BEST IN
THE WORLD ... by Vittorio
M. Gomez, ringside
Contributing to the
legacy of Chicago professional boxing came an active card at the
Aragon Ballroom on Friday, December 10, 2004. The packed
house was ready to enjoy another sizzling event by 8 Count
Productions; the audience contaminated by the enthusiasm
the evening’s fighters were bringing into this event.
HERE'S A LAUGHER FOR YOU... by George Elsasser
And so the stage was set … all I needed was good timing
and being in earshot of Gallagher when he and Donny
neared the press section - and then a polite applause
from the assemblage greeted the entourage of several
fighters...
PRESIDENT LUECKENHOFF ISSUES MEMO
TO MEMBERS OF THE ASSOCIATION OF BOXING COMMISSIONS RE: ROBERT
MITTLEMAN
"The ABC encourages each member commission to determine if Mittleman is
functioning in any capacity in its jurisdiction which would require
licensure. If it is determined that Mittleman is functioning in such a
capacity, I ask that your commission take appropriate action immediately
including injunctive relief or, if warranted, criminal action for acting
without a license..."
A TRAINER'S CORNER: NEVER FORGET
YOUR MOUTHPIECE... by Ricky Ray Taylor
...A
"tough guy" stumbles into the local Boxing gym, surveys the
fighters from the shadows and comes to his own conclusion as to
what "he" would do if ever granted the opportunity to step into
the ring with anybody. When asked if he wants to go a round or two with one of
the fighters in the gym .... aahh, a backdoor exit, no mouthpiece.
GOLDEN BOY PROMOTIONS SIGNS 2004 MEXICAN
OLYMPIAN ABNER MARES
A member of the 2004 Mexican
Olympic team and already a star in the land of his birth,
18-year-old junior featherweight Abner Mares is now prepared to
make his mark in professional boxing...
ROBERTS' SHORTS: ANOTHER DON KING
ELIMINATION... by James Roberts
Well, ol’ Don hooked us up again for our 45 US
dollars. As usual we saw a pretty competitive night of fights.
However, unlike some previous King shows, there were a couple of
surprises this time...
RAFAEL'S NOVEMBER SUPER SIX WITH THE HITS AND
MISSES... by George Elsasser
Danny boy … are you a fite
journalist, or member of the Tarver entourage? Personally, Tarver wears me out
with the rat-tat-tat lip service.
JOHNNY BRATTON - WELTERWEIGHT CHAMP... AND 'REST
OF THE STORY'... by George Elsasser
Warden escorts me with duty lieutenant in tow to the Administrative Segregation
housing block … asks what I think. Couldn’t tell from appearance … older,
softer in physique and no longer the sleek one I had recalled when at prime
time...
ESPN AND MAIN EVENTS COMBINE ON A ONE YEAR, 12
FIGHTS DEAL... by Tom Dickey
ESPN and Main Events announced a one year deal that will bring some of
the hottest young fighters to the forefront. The fighters that would possibly
fight
on the network would be Juan Diaz, Rocky Juarez, and Kermit Cintron.
BEFORE AND AFTER...
by George Elsasser
In the event you hadn't noticed ... the professional fite game is a survivor ... there was no
problem during the great Joe Louis era ... even with his so called "bum of the month" tour the
Brown Bomber repeatedly played to SRO.
WILLIAMS, MITCHELL AND MITTLEMAN TO MEET IN U.S. DISTRICT
COURT... by Elisa Harrison
Boxing manager Robert Mittleman,
who briefly managed Oscar de la Hoya back in 1992, is expected to testify in the
case. Mittleman already plead guilty in May to fixing fights, and
trying to pay a federal prosecutor and a judge to have the case against Williams
dismissed.
LITZAU AND VANDA RETURN TO ACTION NOVEMBER 12TH...
by Mike LeTourneau
NEWS...
GATTI RETURNS JANUARY 29 TO DEFEND AGAINST LEIJA
Boxing’s most-exciting fighter, WBC super lightweight champion
Arturo Gatti, returns to the ring on January 29 to defend his crown against
former world champion Jesse James Leija, it was announced today by Main Events
CEO Kathy Duva.
FROM UNDERCARD TO THE MAIN EVENT: DOES LEIJA HAVE WHAT IT TAKES TO DERAIL GATTI?...
by Chris Robinson
One of boxing’s deepest
and most talented divisions has yet another significant fight headed its way,
as it was announced that fan favorite Arturo ‘Thunder’ Gatti will be putting
his WBC Jr. Welterweight belt on the line vs. former champion Jesse James
Leija. At first glance I saw this fight as a clear victory for Gatti...

the St. Paul Armory. In co-feature attractions, Litzau (11-0,
11KO's) will be taking on Armando Cordoba (20-15, 15 KO's), while
Vanda takes on Patrick Thompson (8-2-1, 4 KO's).
THE IBF'S ACTIONS CLEAR THE WAY FOR A POSSIBLE PEDEN vs CAMPBELL II... by Kenny Perrault
With the fight
between Morales and Barrera a done deal, the IBF felt the proper action to take was to strip Erik Morales of his title. With
the title vacant, #1 contender Robbie Peden will now have his chance at
claiming the crown, and his rightful opponent should be #2 ranked contender Nate
Campbell.
DIBELLA INKS UNDEFEATED LIGHTWEIGHT KOBA 'COBRA' GOGOLADZE
Undefeated lightweight sensation Koba "Cobra" Gogoladze (15-0, 7 KO’s), has
signed an exclusive promotional agreement with DiBella Entertainment, it was
announced today by DBE president Lou DiBella.
WELCOME BACK KOFI... by Chris Robinson
I first remember hearing about Jr. Middleweight contender and
then Welterweight prospect Kofi Jantuah back around late 1998. I was told he was
an Accra, Ghana fighter somewhat in the mold of an Ike Quartey...
EDITOR'S NOTE...
Heartfelt congratulations go out to our very own Jeff Mayweather on the victory of
his charge, Kofi Jantuah. We wish their team great success as they will
challenge for a world title within the next few months.
KOFI
JANTUAH:
SEIZE THE MOMENT...
by Jeff Mayweather
Saturday night, September 18, 2004, at Las
Vegas' MGM Grand Garden Arena a historical boxing event took place. Yet, the
least known guy on the card took center stage and is now no longer a secret in
the Jr. Middleweight Division.

HOLYFIELD AND JONES: SAD STATE OF AFFAIRS... by
David L. Ross
Watching Evander Holyfield get ripped apart this past weekend reminds me of why
certain other fighters SHOULD NOT follow in the Warrior’s footsteps and continue
to fight well past their prime, simply for a paycheck. Was anyone else in pain
watching this supposed “Heavyweight Extravaganza?”
NORMAN STONE ISSUES PUBLIC APOLOGY
Norman “Stoney” Stone, manager/head trainer for World Boxing
Association heavyweight champion John “The Quietman” Ruiz, has
issued a public apology for his behavior last Saturday night
during the Ruiz-Andrew Golota fight at Madison Square Garden.
AN UPDATE ON THE AUSTRALIAN BOXING SCENE...
by Darren Yates, from Down Under
Fenech indicated in the Sun Herald that "The Man" might try to
avoid a bout with Kessler. If that's the case, "The Man" better
have a look around because it doesn't get any easier with any of
the other belt holders.
A DOMINANT HEAVYWEIGHT?...
by Oleg Bershadsky
Any good heavyweight who can punch has a chance to win on any given night,
but that certainly does not mean that the heavyweight division is wide open.
There can still be one dominant heavyweight and if history has shown us anything,
it’s that basically every fighter eventually faces defeat and that
unpredictability in boxing is what draws millions of fans around the world to
this sport.

anticipated return from injury of heavyweight mouthpiece James 'Lights Out' Toney

ley.
COTTO - PINTO TOUGH ONE ON
PAPER... by George Elsasser
Cotto matched the tempo and pace punch for punch while scoring a unanimous
decision - add a pinch of an ingredient missing in most young ones, an ability
to relax while both on offense and defense without once being rattled while
under fire, and what he have here is something special.

THE HEART OF A FIGHTER...
by J. Matt Barber
To Joe Pay-Per-View, who sits on boxing’s fraternal
periphery, the sport merely provides passing amusement... But, to those on the inside - to those who have thirsted
for the thrill of victory, tapped boxing’s wellspring and tasted of it’s sweet
waters; the riddle has a foregone conclusion…
A TRAINER'S CORNER: 'THE 6 O'CLOCK RULE'
...
by Ricky Ray Taylor
Health issues
aside, (don't ever talk "danger" to boxers, they simply won't buy
it), if fighters know for CERTAIN that they won't be
at their BEST if they have to sweat off 2 pounds before their
fight then they will be MUCH more apt to pay attention to an
alternative suggestion for shedding weight.
