BILLY BAXTER, DEALT SOME OF LIFE'S HARDEST HANDS... by Stephen Jones
Billy Baxter is one of the many colorful characters you will
find in Las Vegas but when you take the time to look at Baxter's
life it becomes very apparent that he is more than just another Vegas barfly trying
out his luck at the tables and hanging out at the local gyms. In fact, his life is an amazing
odyssey that may one day see
this guy a success story at the tables as well as in Boxing.
JOE CALZAGHE - ROY JONES JR.: WHO WILL WIN? ... by Jim Amato
Although it is not etched in stone, it is
beginning to look like the proposed Joe Calzaghe - Roy Jones
Jr. bout will be made. The projected date is in November. The
ramifications of this fight could have an immense impact on the
current state of the sport. Will Roy win and reclaim his mantle
of greatness? Will a Calzaghe win seal a much desired match
between Joe and Kelly Pavlik in 2009? Will Calzaghe, upon a win
over Jones retire as he has hinted?

MORA vs DE LA HOYA: WILL THE CONTENDER vs THE OLYMPIAN HAPPEN THIS YEAR?... An Exclusive
Interview by Ed Ludwig
"...If they offer me De La Hoya it’s a huge
opportunity to fight the biggest star in boxing and prove myself
against him. In addition, it’s obviously a great storyline as we both
grew up a few miles a way from each other and he had the Olympics and
I had the Contender, so we have the recognition. I bring a lot to the
table and I’m sure it would be a classy press tour and I think it’s
the best fight for him but we will see how things transpire."

BUILD IT AND THEY WILL COME... by Bill Stephens
The strong fan support
proves that Cincinnati could be a great boxing city again. The
undefeated Aaron Pryor Jr. could be a huge draw for the
Cincinnati fan base; with the great Emmanuel Steward training
and the Hawk himself in the corner, it would be a
huge sellout.
RING TRAGEDY FROM A DOCTOR'S PERSPECTIVE...
by Dr. Margaret Goodman
I was one of the ringside physicians when Pedro Alcazar fought Fernando
Montiel at the MGM Grand Garden in June 2002 for the WBC super
flyweight title. The fight was stopped in the sixth round after a
flurry of body shots rendered Alcazar helpless. Alcazar was deemed
healthy after the bout but collapsed two days later in his hotel room.
Speculation abounded whether he had trouble making
weight, came into the fight dehydrated, suffered an injury in training
or had a predisposing medical condition.
STRICTER PUNISHMENTS, LONGER SUSPENSIONS
A MUST IN FIGHT AGAINST STEROIDS...
by Dr. Margaret Goodman
Screening fighters for steroids began in 2000 when former Nevada commissioner
Dr. Flip Homansky urged the state to lead the way in testing. Because other
state commissions argued that performance-enhancing agents didn't play a role in
unarmed combatants, Nevada stood alone in testing for years.
To date, 41 Nevada fighters have tested positive for illegal drugs, 28 of
whom tested positive for anabolic steroids or masking agents. Half of that
number were caught in 2007 alone.
ROBERT DIAZ
JOINS GOLDEN BOY PROMOTIONS AS MATCHMAKER AND TALENT SCOUT..
“It’s a true pleasure to be a part of an
extremely successful company such as Golden Boy
Promotions,” said Diaz. “I am going to put all of my
effort and dedication into continuing to grow this
tremendous and internationally known company. Words
cannot express how grateful and honored I am to be a part
of the Golden Boy family.”
JEFF “LEFT HOOK” LACY
SIGNS WITH GOLDEN BOY PROMOTIONS
2000 United States
Olympian and Former World Super Middleweight Champion Jeff
“Left Hook” Lacy has accomplished more in a few short years
than most fighters do in an entire career, but Lacy is far
from done in his quest for greatness and will now have
Golden Boy Promotions in his corner to guide him.
“This was the perfect fit for me at this point in my career
and I’m excited about joining the other great fighters on
the Golden Boy Promotions team,” said the 30-year-old Lacy,
owner of a 22-1 record with 17 knockouts. “I’m looking
forward to getting back in the ring and showing everyone
that I’m one of the best fighters in the world today. Most
importantly, I want my title back, and I’m going get it in
2008.”

THE MAYWEATHER FAMILY: FROM A FAN'S PERSPECTIVE...
by Alton L. Hall
Picture Floyd Jr., winning the Welterweight Championship of the world,
which he will, and all of you there to witness it, in the ring to relish

I’d love to have a big beautiful picture of that scenario on my living
room wall.
SAMUEL PETER: THE BRIGHT LIGHT AT THE END
OF A VERY DARK TUNNEL...
by Stephen Jones
The light at the end of the tunnel may be arriving in the shape of
Nigerian Knockout artist Samuel Peter. The difference between Samuel and
the rest of the rising stars is purely that he is regularly beating
heavyweights that are not over the hill but live and on form, very often
on winning streaks themselves.
IBF ORDERS SAMUEL PETER - WLADIMIR KLITSCHKO
BOX-OFF
Samuel “The Nigerian Nightmare” Peter’s manager, Ivalyo Gotzev, is
declaring that the “moment of truth has arrived,” for a top contender to
step up and face his man, now that the IBF has ordered a box-off between
Peter, 24-0 (21), and Wladimir Klitschko, 44-3 (40), to determine its
new number-one contender (on the heels of last week’s announcement that
the WBC has also ordered a box-off between Peter and its top contender
Sinan Samil Sam).
WBC ORDERS SAMUEL PETER/SINAN SAMIL SAN BOX-OFF
FOR #1 CONTENDER
Promoter Dino Duva says he is ecstatic to announce the WBC has ordered a
box-off between its highest-rated available contenders, #4 Samuel "The
Nigerian Nightmare" Peter, 24-0 (21), and #3 Sinan Samil Sam, 24-2 (15)
to determine it's new #1 contender. "We're very happy about the WBC's
decision to recognize Samuel as a candidate for their top spot in the
ratings," exclaimed Duva.
WORLD BOXING COUNCIL NEWS FROM WBC PRESIDENT JOSE SULAIMAN RE:
KLITSCHKO'S TITLE DEFENSE
The Board of Governors of the World Boxing Council has made a final
decision in regards to the heavyweight division, as follows...
HEY VITALI, FIGHT LIKE A CHAMPION!...
by Mike Indri/RBF
Somehow Klitschko, and his "advisor" Shelly Finkel, feel there is no
need to honor commitments and are trying to side step this MANDATORY
fight. If Klitschko’s opponent on September 24th isn’t either
Hasim Rahman or Monte Barrett, the WBC must strip Vitali Klitschko and
tell him he is not worthy of being their champion.
REQUIEM FOR A HEAVYWEIGHT...
by George Elsasser
This is not about some old movie … an actor playing a fighter … nothing
like that. This one is for a heavyweight of the 1950s … a forgotten
warrior of yesterday - one that truly epitomized the term "crowd
pleaser."
MOREL SUSPENDED BY NEVADA STATE ATHLETIC
COMMISSION, FACES UP TO 30 YEARS IN PRISON
This past Wednesday a panel of NSAC board members recommended that the
native of San Juan, Puerto Rico, now residing in Madison, Wisconsin, be
suspended due to his violation of a Nevada Administrative Code that
allows the Commission to suspend a license "if the holder is arrested or
convicted on a charge involving moral turpitude."
GOLDEN BOY PROMOTIONS' REVOLUTION CONTINUES
“My dream has always been to have a company that not only put on great
fights for boxing fans, but that also treated the athletes fairly,” said
Golden Boy Promotions President Oscar de la Hoya. “With the newest
members of our management team - Marco Antonio Barrera and Shane Mosley
– joining Bernard Hopkins and myself, we have all the pieces in place to
change the way business is done in the sport of boxing for the better.”
GOLDEN BOY PROMOTIONS WANTS TO GIVE BOXING BACK TO
THE PEOPLE
“There is no greater thrill for a boxing fan than to be able to see a big fight in
person,” said Oscar De La Hoya, President of Golden Boy Promotions.
“But in recent history it was impossible to do so unless you were
prepared to spend a week’s salary to do so. We want to change that
so now you can get a ticket to a big event and still have money left to
buy a program, park your car, and have some food.”
MANNY PACQUIAO: HE'S BACK!...
by Kenny Perrault
Manny Pacquiao has settled his legal issues with Murad Muhammad and
is now set to fight on September 10th at the Staples Center in Los
Angeles, California.
PACQUIAO: THE PEOPLE HAVE SPOKEN!...
by Kenny
Perrault
The Pacquiao - Morales bout is still fresh in most peoples memory and
why wouldn't it be? It was an instant classic, filled with thrills and
drama... A Pacquiao - Barrera rematch would be interesting as Barrera
seemed to have reinvented himself after the loss to Pacquiao.
WHAT'S NEXT FOR PACQUIAO?...
by Kenny Perrault
It has been three months since the thrilling Erik Morales-Manny Pacquiao
fight. Manny Pacquiao has three possible rematches looming, namely Marco
Antonio Barrera, Juan Manuel Marquez, and Erik Morales. The question is
which fight will he take? Perhaps he will take a pass and move on to a
new foe.

MANNY PACQUIAO vs PRINCE HAMED... WHAT IF?...
by Kenny Perrault
What would have happened if these two men stepped in the ring? I'm not
sure, but I would like to think it would have been exciting while it
lasted. I imagine both men swinging for the fences and landing,
pushing the other back; a knockdown or two sounds about right too.
WBC PRESIDENT SULAIMAN REGRETS VARGAS' STATEMENT
“I regret Fernando Vargas’ statement on TV saying that I do not support
Mexican fighters, and I find it curious, as I have always been told that
I favor Mexican boxers."
THE BUSINESS OF VEGAS BOXING:
THANK GOODNESS BOXING IS COMING TO CAESARS PALACE...
by Jocelyn
Saurini
Discussion topic: Will Caesars Palace and ESPN change the face of boxing on
the Las Vegas strip? Is there finally a player big enough to take away a
little of the MGM Grand, Mandalay Bay, Showtime and HBO lock on big venue
boxing on the strip, and if so, how great could that be for the sport?
PEDEN-CAMPBELL II SET TO EXPLODE...by Darren Yates from Down Under
A lot of fight fans view last year's Nate Campbell's knockout loss to Robbie
Peden as one of the most bizarre in recent memory. After a fairly even first
four rounds of their bout, Nate Campbell took control of most of the 5th round
landing a crushing right hand rip to the body with 1 minute 20 seconds left in
the round that virtually paralyzed Peden for a few seconds...
THANK YOU CLINT EASTWOOD, SYLVESTER STALLONE AND MARK
BRUNETT... by Jocelyn Saurini
So I was excited when both "Million Dollar Baby" and "The Contender" were
set to air this year. I was sure when my mom saw both the movie and the
television series, both of which are about boxers overcoming struggles and
adversity and achieving their dreams, she would at least come around a little
bit.
RAFAEL'S FEBRUARY SUPER SIX RANT...
by George
Elsasser
Look, I too like all there is to about Tszyu the man and fighter … all blue
collar. But what’s this like a true champion, going on the road for a Hatton
backyard fight, nonsense? Your USA Today rankings order has "Hit Man" Hatton at
number eleven - below recent losers Spinks, Mitchell, not to mention a #10
still in development stage Kermit Cintron.
WHY ISN'T ANYONE PAYING ATTENTION TO THIS?...
by Jocelyn Saurini
Why is it that we tracked Oscar and Roy Jones Jr.’s every move after their
Olympic runs, but after Andre Ward wins one of the most dramatic, most
meaningful, most emotional (I’m not going to lie, I was in tears during the
medal ceremony) boxing medals in the history of U.S.A. boxing, people seem...
well, not that interested in what he’s going to do next? Why is that?
PROMOTER DON KING HIRES HEAVYWEIGHTS TO DO BATTLE WITH NETWORK GIANTS; WHAT DO
WE EXPECT TO HAPPEN?...an Opinion Commentary by David L. Ross
How those comments could be considered as being made by
ESPN with 'actual malice' is not clear to me at this point, but I'm sure King's
lawyers will do their best to clarify for the Court exactly how malicious the
comments were as the litigation progresses.
HENRY BRUSELES: A SACRIFICIAL LAMB
FOR MIGUEL COTTO...
by Jeff Mayweather
On Saturday night January 22nd at Miami's
AmericanAirlines Arena Henry Bruseles will be put on center stage with one of
the best fighters in the world. To be honest, I never even heard of Bruseles,
not that he isn't a good fighter.
JACK JOHNSON'S STORY 'UNFORGETTABLE BLACKNESS" DEPICTS
UNFORGIVABLE TIMES... by Aladdin Freeman
The Jack Johnson story named “Unforgettable Blackness”
which was produced by Ken Burns, and will air on PBS January 17th and
18th, is without a doubt one of the best documentaries that you will
ever see. No fan of boxing, American History, and of change for the better,
should miss this show.

THE ABC FIRES AWAY AT SANCTIONING BODIES: MUST

A sanctioning organization shall not be entitled to receive any
compensation, directly or indirectly, in connection with a boxing match,

DURAN CLAIMS HE NEVER SAID 'NO MAS'
The legendary Roberto Duran, who celebrated his 54th birthday on
Thursday, was on a national conference call to promote the June 24th
Team Freedom pay-per-view fight headlined by Yory Boy Campas vs. Matt
Vanda.
TAKING NOTES...by George Elsasser
While awaiting the post fite reviews, I thought I’d jot a few notes from
elsewhere on the fight scene - for starters, how about this Calvin
Brock, of undefeated in 25 outings with 20 by knockout that’s being
force fed to us as something special.
APPARENTLY, BELTS MAKE THE CHAMPION...
by Oleg
Bershadsky
For those of us who continue to strive and hope for a new, more fair and
honest world of boxing, the road to change has been disappointing to say
the least. One of the major obstacles appears to be the strength of the
so-called governing bodies/boxing organizations. It seems that they
answer only to themselves, never held accountable for any wrongdoings,
no matter how egregious.
THE ABC SUPPORTS THE IBF'S HIGHER RANKING OF
WLADIMIR KLITSCHKO OVER DaVARRYL WILLIAMSON
While Mr. Williamson did participate in two bouts and Mr. Klitschko
participated in one bout since October, 2004, it is the opinion of the
ABC that the win/loss records of the respective boxers, particularly Mr.
Klitschko’s victory over Mr. Williamson, together with the level of
competition in which each boxer engaged thereafter, supports a rating of
Mr. Klitschko above a rating of Mr. Williamson.
NINO BENVENUTI, NOT GOOD ENOUGH?...
by Jim
Amato
It looked like a safe defense when he agreed to meet ranked but
undistinguished Carlos Monzon of Argentina. The best thing on the Monzon
resume was a draw with rugged American Bennie Briscoe. This fight marked
the beginning of the reign of "King Carlos."
SHOULD THE MAIN STREAM MEDIA BE BANNED FROM
COVERING BOXING?...
by Eddie Goldman/BoxingRanks.com
The last, or maybe latest, refuge of serious, balanced reporting
and analysis about boxing is the Internet... Yes, the online world is
crowded with fans pretending to be journalists, but sorting out who's
who only requires about a sixth-grade education.
OPEN LETTER FROM JOHN RUIZ TO THE WBA (AND JAMES
TONEY)
It has come to my attention that, behind my back, James Toney and his
people are attempting to have the WBA lift or modify the two-year
sanction against him fighting for my title. That punishment was imposed
on him May 16, 2005, as a result of his testing positive for his use of
an illegal performance enhancing drug in our April 30th fight..."
WHO WILL SPEAK UP ABOUT DOPING IN BOXING?...
by Eddie Goldman/Boxingranks.com
When the two guys introducing bills for a national boxing commission
also promote bills for doping tests for other sports but leave this out
of their bills for boxing, the scope of the problem becomes clearer.
TEAM RUIZ CALLS FOR STRICTER DRUG POLICY IN BOXING
Toney is either and idiot or he simply decided to take a risk and not worry about
the consequences. It's probably both, based on his "I didn't do anything
wrong" excuse...
WORLD ANTI-DOPING AGENCY CHIEF POUND: TONEY
SUSPENSION "AMOUNTS TO NOTHING"...
by Eddie Goldman/Boxingranks.com
Richard Pound, the president of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), is
not impressed with the sanctions taken by the New York State Athletic
Commission against fighter James Toney following his testing positive
for the banned steroid nandrolone.
GOLOTA EARNS ANOTHER ELIMINATOR?...
by Jim Amato
UNBELIEVABLE...That is all I can say. Rumor is that Don King has not
given up on Andrew Golota... Somehow after being blasted out in less than a
round by Brewster in an attempt to win the lightly regarded W.B.O. belt, Andrew
has put himself in line for a shot at the W.B.A. version of the heavyweight
title. Say what???
YOU'RE A FIGHT FAN... by George Elsasser <
You’re a fight fan and you yearn for the old days … when a single title
belt per weight class was the rule … and you could rattle off the names
of the respective champions - Ortiz, Pep, Montgomery, Robinson, Zale,
Lesnevich … and those that followed.
THE JOB OF A RING DOCTOR: MUCH MORE THAN YOU'D
EXPECT...
by
Jocelyn Saurini
Imagine for a second that you were a ring doctor. It's your job to make
decisions about the physical well-being of fighters and whether they can
continue to fight or not. Sounds like a pretty cushy job, yeah? You get
ringside seats to every fight, and how hard could it be to look at a cut
and say, "Yep. That's a cut. Better call the fight."

These three experienced and knowledgeable

tips on keeping a smooth and controlled ring environment that protects
the safety of both fighters. Read on to test your officiating knowledge
against Kenny Bayless, Joe Cortez and Pat Russell and for a summary of
other high points from the 2005 IPRO Convention.
