ANTONIO MARGARITO:
Should Antonio Margarito be licensed again, anywhere in the United States or in any other country? Please send your response via email to:
brcinmiami@aol.com. Thank you for your participation!
FYI:
As of August 18th, 99.9% of those who have responded to the
above cited question are of the opinion that Antonio Margarito SHOULD NOT be
licensed to fight anywhere ever again.
Here are two examples of the answers we are receiving:
"I
was a big fan of his, I advocated for him every
time I had the chance and had many people watch and become a fan of his. I
still respect his toughness but have no respect for him as a boxer. It would be
a dishonor to allow this man back in the ring. I don't believe he was ignorant
in this scandal, he should be thankful for the money he made and leave it at
that." -- Rafael Penaloza
"No no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no
no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no
no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no
no no no no no....... cheater should be banned for life""

Boxing
Has Another Black Eye...by Jeff Mayweather
This article is about a man who was caught
cheating out right, and twenty-six years later another fighter is caught for a
very similar infraction but the punishment in our time is so much lesser than it
was twenty six years ago. It is beyond belief! Panama Lewis and Luis Resto
banned for life, never to make a dime again in a sport they love, while a
quarter of a century later, boxer Antonio Margarito gets a year suspension for
the same exact thing. Following the suspension, Margarito is granted a license
that will enable him to make more money than he has earned in his entire boxing
career to date. He stands to make millions of dollars, and he will be able to
continue on with his life as a professional fighter, making a nice living while
Luis Resto's life as a fighter was cut off completely and he was unable to make
a penny as a professional fighter ever again.
The punishment dealt in 1983 fit the crime. One
would think the punishment in 2009 would be just as severe or even worse, yet
all these years have passed and the same crime has less meaning, certainly an
incredibly more lenient punishment. In a sport that can use some cleaning up,
this would be the issue to take a stand on, and put it to rest forever.
The first thing that
stood out was Sanders' question... "When does punishment turn into
outright vindictiveness?"
How is anyone being vindictive towards Margarito when: a) He already had a
fight in Mexico against Robert Garcia and b) He now has a chance -undeserved
as it may be- to fight Manny Pacquiao? All of this after having been caught
using an illegal substance (Plaster of Paris) in his hand wraps?
I'm not going to make many new boxing friends writing
this. I understand that Margarito is reviled by the majority of fight
fans. And what he was accused of is a very serious offense. My
question is, when does punishment turn into outright vindictiveness?
The California State Athletic Commission Says NO to Antonio
Margarito...
The California State Athletic Commission has rejected former
world champion Antonio Margarito's application for a
California boxing license. The Commissioners did not feel
Antonio Margarito has been sufficiently "rehabilitated" after
the hand wrap incident that took place in his January 2009
fight with Shane Mosley.
The Commission's position stated that in the event Margarito
didn't know illegal inserts were inserted into his hand wraps,
as he steadfastly maintains, he must still be held responsible
and thus, not worthy of a California license.
Commissioners Steve Alexander, Eugene Hernandez, Dr.
Christopher Riza, Dr. Van Lemons and DeWayne Zinkin voted
against reinstating Margarito's license. Commissioner John
Frierson's hand was the only one raised in favor.
In the matter of the Antonio Margarito case the Association of Boxing Commissions, (ABC), officers
were pleased that Mr. Antonio Margarito did indeed appear before the
California State Athletic Commission, (CSAC), for licensure, the ABC had
maintained since the beginning of this matter that Mr. Margarito should seek a
hearing with CSAC. The ABC was also pleased that other member commissions
held firm against licensing Mr. Margarito until he could appear before CSAC
since they were the original disciplining commission.
Loading one's gloves, or removing the stuffing from one's
gloves, is the most grievous sin a boxer can commit.
Regardless, the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation
on Thursday without so much as asking him a solitary question, paving the way for
Margarito to receive a likely seven-figure payday to meet
pound-for-pound champion Manny Pacquiao at Cowboys Stadium in
Arlington, Texas...
HBO, which accepted an Emmy last year for broadcasting Eric
Drath's brilliant documentary "Assault in the Ring," about a
case in which trainer Panama Lewis and boxer Luis Resto
removed the stuffing from Resto's gloves and casted his hand
wraps, is going to distribute this train wreck.
"I am surprised that anyone is sticking with him. I really
am," said Ronnie Shields, currently a top trainer and
formerly a junior welterweight contender. "I can only speak
for myself, but as a fighter, if I was aware that my trainer
put something in my gloves that was going to give me an
advantage, there's no way that I would ever use him again.
You have to have some kind of moral sensibility to yourself,
to feel that you don't have to cheat to win.
"If someone keeps working with Capetillo, all I can think is
that maybe they want a cheater in their corner. I'm
sorry, but you have to suspect the worst. You have to go
back and look at these guys, see how long he was working
with them, maybe he was helping these guys to cheat and to
win. You have to look at these guys and ask, "Do they have
morals?"
It's quite possible that they don't have any moral
integrity. But it's also possible that we, as outside
observers, are failing to see the world through their eyes.
"Team Alexander has accepted an offer from Don King for a
single unification bout versus Tim Bradley on January 29,
2011. Team Alexander is now waiting for a bout agreement,"
stated Kevin Cunningham, trainer and manager of WBC and IBF
jr. welterweight champion.
"Despite an agreement by promoters Don King and Gary Shaw to
split the purse 50/50 between both fighters, the highly
anticipated bout appeared to be in jeopardy last month when
both sides expressed concern over the offer they were
presented."

122 and 130 pounds where he stamped himself as one of the

the Tijuana fighter seems to recognize that his moment in the

Limond are more of an encore to what has been an incredible
career.
Morales turned professional at the age of sixteen on March
29th, 1993 and built upon his record in Mexico, California and
Nevada. His first taste of a world title came in his thrilling
September 1997 clash with Daniel Zaragoza in which he
outlasted the grizzled veteran and stopped him with a body
shot in the 11th round to claim the WBC junior featherweight
crown.

Joey Gilbert vs
Kassim Ouma September 25th in Reno, Nevada...
The Grand Sierra Resort and Let's Get It On Promotions
are pleased to present a very special main event for Reno
Xtreme Fights VI on Saturday September 25th. Former IBF Jr.
middleweight champion, Kassim "The Dream" Ouma (26-7-1, 16
KOs), will take on Reno's own Joey Gilbert (20-2, 15 KOs) for
the vacant NABA middleweight title.
Ouma has one of the most
unbelievable stories in professional sports. He was kidnapped by the National
Resistance Army at the age of six in his home country of Uganda and forced to be
a child soldier. After years of being ordered to do unthinkable things, Ouma
found boxing.
Beware! Shine Fight Promotions Red Flagged...
On August 17, 2010, we received a check
from the promoter for all the officials that worked the event until it was
cancelled; however, this check did not provide the fighters any financial
relief. After meeting with our legal staff, we released the claim on the bond
for the promoter on August 23, 2010.
This release of the bond would allow the
promoter to seek out other states to hold an event; therefore, we have placed
Devin Price dba "Shine Fight Promotions LLC" on Fight Fax, Red Flag list.
Shine Fights CEO Devin Price has decided to move the MMA
promotional firm's Sept 10 Grand Prix Tournament to First
Council Casino in Newkirk, OK in the wake of questionable
treatment by the Virginia state athletic commission.
"I was given verbal approval for our Sept 10 event by the Virginia state
commission 32 days prior to the fight date." said Price. "The commission did
not express any problems with our event until certain members of the MMA
community accused Shine of having reneged on our responsibilities following
the cancellation of our May 15, 2010 "Worlds Collide: Ricardo Mayorga-Din
Thomas" fight card in Fayetteville, NC. The Virginia commission was
understandably concerned, but instead of allowing us to prove the concerns
were unfounded, they refused to provide a license. And we could have proved
this since on Friday [Sept. 3] the North Carolina commission ruled that Shine
HAD met all its obligations from the May 15, 2010 event.
Ivan "Iron Boy" Calderon Loses to Giovanni Segura...
WBA junior flyweight champion Giovanni Segura, (25-1-1, 21
KOs) connected a shot to Calderon's liver in the 8th round
of a very competitive fight forcing the previously
undefeated Calderon to go down to a knee. Ivan remained in
that position through the ten count.
Calderon, (34-1-1, 6 KOs), made no excuses, acknowledging
he just couldn't bounce back from the devastating liver
shot. He is hoping to get a rematch in 2011.
Segura is now the undisputed WBA and WBO jr. flyweight
champion. The fight took place in the Coliseo Mario "Quijote"
Morales in Guaynabo, Puerto Rico. At the time of the stoppage,
two judges had Segura ahead in the cards.

Slowly and hopefully surely the tendency in boxing to keep a
fighter undefeated as long as possible appears to be
diminishing. That's a welcome development, because far too
many promising prospects build pristine records against
suspect opposition, only to fall apart when they meet a rival
who fights back.
Sam Peter (34-3, 27 KOs), is
in his final week of training camp in the high altitude of Big Bear, Calif. A
native of Nigeria, now fighting out of Las Vegas, Nev., Peter will break camp
on September 2 and head to Frankfurt, Germany to challenge IBF/WBO heavyweight
champion Wladimir Klitschko (54-3, 48 KOs.)
Promoted by KMG and K2, in association with Top Rank, Klitschko vs. Peter will
take place Saturday, September 11 at
the Commerzbank Arena in Frankfurt.

"Hammerin" Hank
Lundy in a Short Notice Breeze... by George Elsasser
Philadelphia's "Hammering" Hank Lundy rebounded from a
John Molino TKO loss for the NABO lightweight title, with a three day notice
decision blowout of Toronto's Omri Lowther.
Entering last nite's main event with Lowther on paper, it
looked like a good test for the man with the "Hammering Hank" sobriquet,
with Lowther arriving at 14-1, 10 KOs and Lundy at 18-1-1, 10 KOs.
Former
Undisputed Welterweight and Junior Welterweight Champion Zab "Super" Judah
(39-6, 27 KO's) of Brooklyn takes the next step in his quest to regain his
Junior Welterweight Crown on Saturday, October 2nd, when he takes on Michael
"Cold Blood" Clark (40-5-1, 18 KO's) of Columbus, Ohio at Newark's spectacular
Prudential Center Arena.
Tickets, priced at $53, $78, $103 and $200 go on sale today at "The Rock" Box
Office and on Ticketmaster.
Alexander Povetkin and Bruce Seldon met in the ring at the
South Philly Arena on July 28. Teddy Atlas, who trains
Povetkin, says that the meeting was a "glorified sparring
session" and that efforts were made to replicate the
atmosphere of a real fight even though it was just a training
session.
The facts are as follows.
Earlier this year, Povetkin was the designated mandatory
challenger for Wladimir Klitschko's IBF heavyweight crown. The
two sides could not agree on contract terms. Klitschko's promotional company won rights to the bout with a purse bid of
$8,313,000. Twenty-five percent of that amount was to go to
Team Povetkin. Then Alexander pulled out of the fight.
With ESPN2 on a couple weeks hiatus from pro fighting,
boxing fans were treated to couple old time eight round club fights - where
the winners eventually end up is anyone's guess, but they came to fight.
Show opens with lightweights Mercito Gesta of Cebu in the
Philippines - an unbeaten solidly constructed southpaw loaded with
confidence in demeanor, in with age 35 veteran Genaro Trazancos of Fort
Myers, FL via Mexico City.
The younger Gesta owned the better moves, and at age 22
was the far quicker in all departments - Trazancos gave it his best, but the
job application of 22-11-1, 13 KOs carried an asterisk that hinted of rest
of the story - the veteran arrived off six losses in last seven outings.
Boxing's most highly-anticipated fight of the Fall, the World
Boxing Organization (WBO) featherweight title fight between
two-division world champions JUAN MANUEL LOPEZ and RAFAEL MARQUEZ, scheduled for
September 18, at the MGM Grand and televised live on SHOWTIME Championship
Boxing, has been postponed due to a hand injury incurred by Marquez. Top Rank
and Gary Shaw Productions are working with the MGM Grand and SHOWTIME in
rescheduling the worldtitle fight within four weeks of the
original date.
Wednesday night fights over ESPN2 came to us fans from
good ol' Louisiana country - translation, referee Laurence Cole working the
feature mismatch and some oddball in the opener that shall remain nameless.
On that note, let me toss in that all went as
choreographed - highly rated albeit still untested in a now thirteen kept
appointments, Cuban amateur star Erislandy Lara - made short work of
journeyman Willie Lee, who went quietly at the 1:48 mark of opening stanza.
Lara now IBF junior middleweight rated #11 which is fine here - on paper looks to me at age 27, the brain trust is readying to move
the slick port side slinging Cuban up a few rungs for title timber test. Goods for starters, and about time the unbeaten one is in with legitimate
opponent.
Ten Rounds, Seven
Round Edition... by Tony Montgomery Round 1: Manny Pacquiao may be the biggest
star in boxing and has taken on nearly everyone in his weight class or
above. So I ask why fight Antonio Margarito? Pacquiao has had plenty of
accusations thrown his way in the past year regarding the use of PED but
nothing has ever been proven. Margarito, on the other hand, is a cheater who
was literally caught red handed. I will NOT be buying this fight and doubt
I'll watch the replay. I will not give Margarito my time -or money- and I
hope many of you feel the same way. If Margarito can pull off the upset it
will put him back in the spotlight which is a place where he never deserves
to be again. And shame on any United States Boxing Commission that will
sanction this fight.
My Life
Is in
Jeopardy... by Jeff Mayweather
The person I believe to be responsible for these threats is Bill
Haney, owner of the newly opened Hit Factory. I want everyone in the world to
know that if something happens to me, or to the person whose name I can't mention in this
article, it will have happened at the hands of Bill Haney himself or one of the
many employees who are a part of his crew, all of which can be found working
inside the Hit Factory.
I don't fear any man; it is not out of fear that I'm writing this
piece. I'm doing it because should anything happen to me or the person
who has to remain nameless for now, everyone who has read my story will know exactly who
to look for.

Beyrooty Still on Duty After All These Years... by Doug
Krikorian
In the wacky world of boxing, endemically laden with
characters of every imaginable stripe,
John Beyrooty
is a
classically perfect fit for the sport.
Indeed, Beyrooty, a 1968 Warren High graduate who will be
inducted into the California Boxing Hall of Fame on June 26 at
the Sportsmen's Lodge in Studio City, might be the most
unlikely person to be anointed such an honor in light of a
background not exactly steeped in fistic knowledge.
"The first fight I ever covered for the old Los Angeles Herald
Examiner on March 15, 1979 between Alberto Sandoval and Eddie
Logan at the Olympic Auditorium was the first fight I ever
saw," says Beyrooty, who would cover the sport for the paper
for 10 years until its closing in 1989, and then became public
relations director of Forum Boxing for another eight. "But
that was typical of my life. I also didn't know anything about
journalism - and wound up becoming a sportswriter."
