TRINIDAD-WRIGHT: A REAL SHOWDOWN

By Mike Leanardi

There is nothing like a quick turnaround after a mega fight. Just one week after the Castillo/Corrales epic we, the boxing fan, are in line for yet another treat, Felix Trinidad vs Winky Wright. The stage is set at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas for a showdown of two very talented, well respected fighters with vastly contradicting styles.

Felix "Tito" Trinidad, (42-1 35KO's), enters the fight as a sizeable betting favorite despite his inactivity, having fought just one time in the last three years due to an early retirement, and is the better known fighter. In fact, Trinidad is the fan favorite and the box office draw. Trinidad is accustomed to the spotlight, having won his first world championship at age twenty as a welterweight and has now won titles in three weight classes (jr. middle and middle).

Trinidad is a classic puncher, he possesses great power in both hands and stalks his opponents, if you stand in front of him or try to trade with him you are in serious danger of being knocked out. Trinidad has decent hand speed and he uses it to his advantage when he counters with his devastating left hook; however, he does not have a very effective jab and tries to hurt opponents with big, hard shots rather than outbox them. He fights in a rather stationary manner, with little head or torso movement and takes some shots because of it. His lack of movement, matched with mediocre balance due to his straight up and down stance, causes Trinidad to get knocked down quite a lot for a world class fighter; however, his chin is adequate, having been knocked out only once in his career, by middleweight king Bernard Hopkins.

For Trinidad to win this fight, he was to be able to land hard punches cleanly and hurt Wright, especially with the big left hook. Trinidad will be looking for the knockout , if he is unsuccessful, he has to at least floor Wright a couple times to build an advantage on the scorecards. Trinidad will look to trade punches, because Wright should not be able to hurt Trinidad, but he can outbox him.

Ronald "Winky" Wright(48-3 25KO's) is currently the Undisputed Junior Middleweight Champion and is moving into uncharted territory at 160lbs., to take on probably the biggest challenge of his career in
Felix Trinidad. Wright, who has gone much of his career unknown and unheralded is coming off back to back victories over future Hall of Famer, fan favorite and multiple time World Champion Shane Mosley.

Wright, a southpaw, is a very skilled boxer with a great jab and an impenetrable defense. Wright can stand immediately in front of his opponent and never get with a clean punch, his defense is that secure. His defense helps make him a very skilled counter puncher in the way he is able to neutralize an opponents punches then counter effectively and circle out of danger. Matched with his defense, Wright is very
good at using the entire ring, while not necessarily fleet of foot, he moves around the ring very well to avoid danger and land clean counter shots. In addition to his stellar defense, Wright has proven to have a
good chin, while he is very rarely hit with clean punches he still has proven he can absorb them when he has to.

Wright has never been knocked out in 51 professional fights and has only been knocked down in one, although he was down multiple times in that fight. Wright is not a big puncher, in fact he has not KO'd someone in over three years. He simply uses his skill to outbox his opponents and win fights on points. Wright is going to look to jab, land clean punches and use the ring to his advantage while avoiding Trinidad's power shots.

The fight will come down to Trinidad's power versus Wright's boxing skills and chin. If Trinidad can test Wright's chin by landing clean power shots, he might be able to knock Wright down or even out, regardless of the opponent Trinidad always has a puncher's chance. If Wright is able to avoid and absorb Trinidad's power, while landing his jab and counter punching effectively he should be able to win rounds and beat Trinidad on points. I see this fight going the distance, with Ronald "Winky" Wright winning via close decision.
