TKO VICTORY OVER VARGAS RETURNS 'SUGAR' SHANE MOSLEY TO THE LIMELIGHT...

An energetic crowd of 9,237 at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas, Nevada, saw the return of “Sugar” Shane Mosley (42-4, 36 KO’s) to the limelight as he scored a 10th Round TKO victory over Fernando Vargas (25-3). Referee Joe Cortez elected to stop the bout due to a massive swelling over Vargas’ left eye, which had already forced his eye completely closed.

From the very beginning the fight was fought at a fast pace, with Vargas moving forward throughout most of the fight and Mosley effectively boxing while backing up. The swelling over Vargas’ eye began early in the fight and became grotesque by the round 7th; after the fight, Vargas said, “I think it was in the second or third round. I think it was a head butt.”

Mosley’s speed and boxing ability seemed to be too much for Vargas throughout the fight and as Vargas’ vision became seemingly impaired, Mosley became only more effective. Speaking on the fight Mosley said afterwards, “Fernando is a warrior. He is a very strong fighter. He is a tough warrior. I told you it was going to be a war. I was just trying to keep from falling down; he was so heavy and leaning on me.”

This impressive victory should propel Mosley back to boxing prominence and will likely set him up with another mega-fight in the future. When asked about where he would like his career to go from here Mosley said, “Mayweather is the number one guy and he is the only other guy out there to beat at welterweight.”

As for Vargas’s career from here, it is unclear if he will still be a star attraction in the future and if can still compete with the best in the world. He seemed somewhat uncertain about his future after the fight, only saying, “I will sit back and see what my family thinks and go from here. I don’t think this is the last you will see of me in the ring, but I will talk with my family.” However, Vargas did say in the post-fight press conference he would be open to a rematch.
