"GOING OUT IN STYLE"

Saturday night, June 7th, 2003... once again, arousing performances from Arturo Gatti and Micky Ward. The third time around only left the true boxing fan wanting more, even though three times is more than enough with these two face first warriors.
I liked the commentary from Larry Merchant when he said that these are two throwback white fighters; very well stated. Two very classy guys laying it all on the line. Micky Ward will always be remembered, not because he was such a great fighter but because he found the perfect guy to compliment his style and made the most of every occasion they got together. Without Arturo Gatti, the boxing world would have never heard of Micky Ward.
Gatti, not a great fighter, but a great warrior who has proven that he has tremendous heart and can be entertaining against anyone put in front of him win; lose or draw you're going to appreciate watching Arturo Gatti. We as fans love Gatti because we know at some point and time in the fight, no matter what the game plan may be, he is going to get hit with some good clean shots and at some point in the fight he is going to go to war; and the game plan is going to be put on the back-burner for a moment, even though he will find his way back to the original game plan after being reminded by his corner.
I applaud both guys for giving their all inside of that ring for the World to see not once, not twice but all three times; they left everything in the ring on those nights they faced one another. That is what boxing is all about, not the getting hit so much, and yes, the give and take side is great for entertainment value...And when the fight is over, when that final bell rings, you didn't lose because you were too conservative, when the fight is over you're left feeling like I could have done so much more... Boxing is about leaving your fight in the ring no matter what your style may be! When you go to a gun fight, be sure to fire your gun! So just in case it is you on the losing end at least the Coroner can say "He put up one hell of a fight, he emptied his chamber as well and went out in a Blaze of Glory." At the end of the night that is what the boxing public judges you by. No matter what your skill level is, give your best every time out.
Gatti and Ward exemplify that statement, Giving Your All. These two warriors will forever be appreciated long after their careers are over. Well, Micky Ward didn't emerge victorious inside the ring but he certainly remains victorious in the hearts of many; not a bad swan song... He went out in Style.
