WRIGHT MAN FOR THE JOB By Jeff Mayweather |

One of the most intriguing fights on the dais this year is the upcoming Felix "Tito"
Trinidad vs Ronald "Winky" Wright encounter. The May 14th match-up is really a pick'em
fight. Tito is a huge fan favorite as well as one of the best punchers in all of boxing at any
weight. Trinidad puts it on the line each and every time out, never will you
be disappointed with a Trinidad fight, he gives his all until the final bell.
Trinidad has been in one stinker his entire career and it wasn't his fault, we
have Oscar de la Hoya to blame for that one.
In my honest opinion I thought Oscar de la Hoya won the bout, but Trinidad never stopped trying, even when he was clearly out boxed; maybe because of his effort to sustain an attack to the final bell the judges awarded him the decision. In his lone defeat at the hands of Bernard 'The Executioner' Hopkins he fought gallantly until the referee called a halt to the all out assault that Hopkins administered throughout the fight. Not once did Trinidad stop applying pressure, nor did he stop trying. Hopkins used his aggressive will against Felix by making him run into punches and not being there when something came back at him. Yet this was Bernard at his very best; in my eyes I haven't seen Hopkins come close to duplicating that kind of a performance. My reason for mentioning these two fights is that Wright will have to take a page or a blueprint from these two fighters in his quest to defeat Trinidad. Winky Wright was once known for his masterful boxing skills but for some reason he has abandoned them maybe to make himself more endearing to the boxing public or maybe he no longer trust his legs. He is still a great defensive fighter although most of his defense now is either off the ropes or in the pocket. In my opinion that Winky Wright won't win against Trinidad. We will have to see the Winky Wright of old, the evasive one who made the use of his legs a part of his arsenal. I feel this is more or less a fight in which Winky can control his own fate. If he can reach back and grab a taste of the boxer, the one that was sort of a cutie and seem to have form while he was making guys miss. he will emerge victorious. The Winky that beat Shane Mosley twice and Bronco McKart three times will come up short. To beat Trinidad you must give him lateral movement and angles; he has terrible balance and even at times crosses his feet trying to attack. If Tito's dealing with side to side movement he looks like a newborn lamb whose legs are struggling to hold him up, although his legs are certainly very strong since he is a marathon runner. It's more of a reaction problem with Trinidad. If Wright employs this strategy he will win and win by a pretty wide margin. Trinidad you can never count out because of his will and determination and his resiliency, and of course his explosive one punch power that can end a fight at any time. No matter what, Felix Trinidad will still be trying to win until the final bell rings. Wright must be focused even down to the last second of the fight. With Trinidad being the fans favorite and a superstar in the sport , he will be the betting favorite. With the right game plan Winky still could very well be the Wright guy to once again defeat Trinidad...
