NO SURPRISES

By Jeff Mayweather

On Saturday night May 22 at the Atlantic City Boardwalk Floyd Mayweather Jr. once again reigned supreme as he made the leap to a higher weight class.

Mayweather, a former WBC Jr. Lightweight Champion and current WBC Lightweight Champion, now campaigning at Jr. Welterweight was successful as usual. He appeared to be much stronger than his opponent DeMarcus 'Chop Chop' Corley who has practically been a Jr. Welterweight his entire professional career.

Corley claimed he would be the stronger man because Mayweather was moving up, yet it didn't appear that way as Floyd dominated Corley, backing him up and fighting flat-footed at times and not in the flashy hit and miss style so many who know of Floyd have become accustomed to. Although his performance was far from flawless he did totally dominate the action over a twelve round period putting Corley down once throughout the fight.

Floyd appeared to be content to use his will to win more than his skills. Still, it was easy to see that these two fighters were not on the same level as Mayweather at times would toy with Corley, then open up with really big shots hurting Corley badly. Corley deserves a lot of credit as he weathered the storm and finished on his feet. Within the first four rounds it appeared as though Corley might just get lucky enough to pull off the upset as he landed several clean shots and even appeared to have shaken Mayweather up. After the fourth round Corley looked as though he was spent and never seemed to regain the fire that he started with. From the fourth round on it was total domination by Mayweather; in the end there would be no surprises.
