SHE BE STINGIN' (AGAIN)
|
![]() |
Laila currently holds three of the five titles in her weight class and is improving with each outing. She has come so far from the early stages of career when she was certainly being protected; back then she was matched up against Jackie Hyde Frazier and although both were inexperienced it was a very entertaining fight. Both fighters showed that there was more to them than being the daughters of two former World Heavyweight Champions who would use their last names to catapult themselves into prominence. Laila went on to win that match by decision.
When Laila and her husband decided to move to Las Vegas, her husband Johnny "Yah Ya" McClain, a former two time WBU Cruiserweight Champion, found her the perfect compliment in trainer Roger Mayweather, a former two time World Champion himself. These two appear to be a match made in heaven as they feed off each other's energy.
Laila works extremely hard, and her husband and Roger also push her very hard to be the best she can be. I know about Laila first hand because I have sparred countless rounds with her and she is a completely different fighter.
I love sparring with her because she likes to talk trash and I love to frustrate her, but I can't play with her and I must remain focused when I'm in the ring with her because she punches very hard with either hand. On a few occasions when I have gotten complacent I have tasted her power. It's no joke!
Laila is fearless inside the ring plus she is a student of the game; whenever we're done with sparring and she's done with her workout, she asks questions on what she needs to improve on and what are her strengths and weaknesses. She loves the competitiveness of boxing.
Ms. Ali can be such a sweetheart outside of the ring when you talk to her but the moment you step in the ring with her, her mindset changes. The same sweetheart of a woman I was just talking to now wants to tear my head off. She certainly doesn't lack killer instinct when she steps inside that ring. The minute sparring is over she is so sweet again, it's like she's is a completely different person.
Laila will be in action again, this time on the Lennox Lewis vs Vitali Klitschko undercard. "Iron" Mike Tyson's disappearing act left a very big void to fill in terms of ticket sales. There is no more famous name than Ali, and even though it's not the "Greatest," Laila isn't a bad substitute; she is by far the most popular woman in all of boxing.
I can attest to the fact that she is ready to go, she is punching harder than the last time we sparred and moving her head better. I once again expect a dominant performance. Laila Ali is beautiful, articulate and most importantly she can do what the fans are paying their money to see. She can flat-out fight.
Unfortunately, Ali will be paired against her once conquered foe Valerie Mahfood, whom she stopped in the 7th round of their first meet, with Laila capturing her third World Title, compliments of Ms. Mahfood. While other offers were put out there for various opponents in the weight class, the only one that came back was Mahfood. I once again applaud Miss Valerie Mahfood for stepping up to the challenge.
Those fans in attendance on June 21 will be forced to watch Laila trying to put on a repeat performance as she impressed millions of viewers on the ESPN telecast in their first encounter; Laila wants be a part of the HBO portion of the broadcast. I also think that a lot of Laila Ali fans will be present to witness her continued growth as a professional fighter and as a World Champion. Once again 'She Be Stingin'...

Laila Ali has fast become one of the most dominant woman in boxing. Of course the notoriety extended to her by her father, none other than the Greatest of All Time Muhammad Ali, hasn't hurt. However, every since the spotlight has been placed upon her she hasn't looked back; she has moved forward at full speed to become the class of her division.
