SHANE'S DILEMMA |
![]() |

Whatever the case, he did nothing for himself, nothing to make the boxing public clamor to see a rematch with Oscar De la Hoya. He also may have hurt himself in terms of his appeal to the buying public when he boldly made the statement that $4.25 million dollars was "Chump Change."
Unfortunately, I know a guy who made that same statement about $12.5 million for six fights. He too is one of the best fighters in the world, yet no one cares to spend their hard earned money to see him. The fighter that I'm referring to is none other than my nephew, Floyd Mayweather, Jr.
What is wrong with these young, wealthy athletes? There are a lot of fighters who would risk dying for just a percentage of what these guys are making! These same guys who weren't born with a silver spoon in their mouths, how soon do they forget!
I really like Shane and I think that he's a classy guy who generally knows the right things to say when the cameras are on and a microphone is stuck in his face. This time he lost it in front of the whole world, and they wonder why Oscar makes all the money? Oscar has mastered the game of Public Relations; when that camera turns on, he says all the right things and whether it's real or scripted, obviously it works. Just because you beat the most popular guy in the sport it doesn't make you a star nor does it give you bargaining power unless you do the fight right away and not after suffering two loses while the same guy you beat has won two more titles since that time you two fought.
To expand on that thought, let me to give you an example: Frankie Randall beating Julio Cesar Chavez didn't make him a star; while Chavez maintained his star status even in defeat, Randall went on to be nothing more than an afterthought. Randall may have his place in history reserved but he will only be remembered for giving Chavez his first defeat.
De la Hoya vs Mosley is almost the same scenario, played out many years later. Only difference here is that Shane once made it to the top of the Pound for Pound ratings and was fortunate enough to earn a lot more money in the process. There's not even $2 million dollars available for Shane to fight any of the other champions.
So either Shane will take the 'Chump Change' or he will stand on his morals and walk away from it. End of Dilemma.
So what's next for Shane? Oscar? Maybe yes, maybe no... Shane certainly didn't raise his stock in the fight against Marquez. Maybe it was just the fact that Marquez was left-handed or could it be the effects of the two back to back defeats at the hands of Vernon Forrest?
