Judge K. Michael Moore, of the United States District Court for the Southern
District of Florida, located in Miami, today issued an order granting the WBC
#2-ranked heavyweight boxer and former WBC cruiserweight world champion, Juan
Carlos Gomez, an injunction preventing his former promoters -- Sugar Ray Leonard
Boxing, LLC, Team Freedom Promotions LLC, and their lawyer, Leon Margules --
from interfering in Mr. Gomez' fights as he campaigns for the heavyweight title.
Specifically, Sugar Ray Leonard and Team Freedom are "permanently enjoined from
interfering with any fight in which" Mr. Gomez "participates anywhere, and from
interfering with any other business or contractual relation that" Mr. Gomez
"enters into."
The order was issued less than two weeks after Mr. Gomez filed a complaint in
Florida Federal District Court, claiming that Sugar Ray Leonard Boxing and its
co-defendants were preventing the former WBC cruiserweight champion from making
a living by threatening to sue promoters who arranges fights for Gomez. The
lawsuit seeks $2 million in compensatory damages, and $10 million in punitive
damages against the former promoters.
Mr. Gomez' attorney, Leah M. Campbell of New York-based Schlam Stone & Dolan LLP,
said, "This was a great victory for Juan Carlos Gomez. We are delighted that the
Court ruled as it did. From a boxing perspective, Mr. Gomez scored a first-round
knock-down in this lawsuit."
