BOXING FANS: Please BOYCOTT
JONES vs HOPKINS II (PPV $50).
This fight is taking place ten years too late, after Roy
Jones Jr. has been getting knocked down like a one-winged fly. He
stands to get hurt by a much stronger and "younger" in the ring, (Bernard
Hopkins). Don't buy it, don't watch it, and let your TV carrier know you
have ZERO interest in watching "Dead Man Walking" Part II.
Hopkins-Jones II: Better Never Than Late... by
Thomas Hauser/SecondsOut.com
This is a column I'd rather not write. But I chronicle the contemporary
boxing scene, and I'd be less than honest if I didn't write it.
Ten days before Jones fought Joe
Calzaghe, Roy told the media, "Bernard Hopkins can talk about whoever he's going to fight next.
I couldn't care less. I already beat Bernard Hopkins, so why would I want to
fight him again? He can do all he wants to try and tie himself to my career,
but I'm not tied to his."
On November 8, 2008, Calzaghe exposed Roy as a once-great fighter who had
become a shell of his former self.
B-Hop-RJ II! WTF?!?! ... by Steve Kim/Maxboxing
In response to Golden Boy Promotions announcing their pay-per-view show
featuring the rematch between Bernard Hopkins and Roy Jones on April 17th,
Top Rank announced on Friday afternoon that they are staging the third
installment of Sugar Ray Leonard-Thomas Hearns on that same date. When will
the madness end? First that snafu that is the battle for March 13th and now
this?!?!
Pacquiao -
Clottey, You Buying?... by Kenny Perrault
When a fighter reaches a certain level of celebrity
his fights start to sell themselves. This is the
case of Manny Pacquiao. His upcoming bout against
Joshua Clottey seems to be lacking the hype and
advertisement that fights of the past have received.
The reason for this is simple; Manny has reached
such a high point in his boxing career much of the
hype is not necessary. If you've seen Pacquiao in
action you know what to expect on fight night and
that's action, plenty of action. He always delivers
and his fans adore him for it, win or lose.
I Would Like to See Joshua Clottey Win but it Won't Happen...by Jason
Snowden
In my opinion, Joshua Clottey is one of
boxing's nice guys; he really has had to work his way from
nothing to get this chance and I have no problem with him
sharing a ring with Pacquiao. Clottey is a good boxer, he
has a fantastic chin, he is strong, hits hard and when he
lets his hands go he is very dangerous. We saw this in the
first half of the Miguel Cotto fight.

the Decade and boxing's No. 1 pound for pound attraction
Manny Pacquiao for his World Boxing

Cowboys Stadium. Soto (50-7-2, 32
KOs), of Tijuana, Mexico, will rumble with former world
lightweight David Diaz (35-2-1, 17

lightweight title on the same card.
Alexander Stuns Urango, Unifies Titles on HBO Boxing After Dark... by Larry Flores
WBC Junior Welterweight champion
Devon Alexander "The Great" parlayed an outstanding
performance and a dynamic, brain rattling uppercut into
his inclusion among the elite fighters in the 140-pound
division.
The joint Don King and Warriors
Boxing production of HBO’s "Boxing After Dark," featuring a Junior Welterweight unification bout between
unbeaten WBC title holder Devon Alexander (19-0 with 12
KOs) and IBF champion Juan "Iron Twin" Urango (22-2 with
17 KOs), was expected to be a close, evenly matched
contest between the two title holders.
However, the Saint Louis, Missouri
native Alexander left no doubt as to his clear
superiority over Colombia's Urango, recording a
sensational, 8-round TKO over the hard punching IBF
champion.

Votes Mills Lane Recipient of the James J. Farley Award...
By
a majority vote of the officers and the board of
directors, Mills Lane has been chosen to receive the
Boxing Writers Association of America's James J.
Farley award for "Honesty and Integrity in Boxing."
The Farley award was first given out in 1977 and has
only been awarded periodically since.
Lane was an amateur boxer of note and a solid
professional for the brief time his career lasted,
but his true calling came inside the ring as a
referee. Lane refereed some of the biggest fights in
boxing history, including the rematch between Evander
Holyfield and Mike Tyson, when he had to disqualify
Tyson for biting the champion's ear.
Undefeated
Prospect Edwin "La Bomba" Rodriguez Super-Sizing for Immediate
Future....
Highly-regarded,
unbeaten prospect Edwin "La
Bomb" Rodriguez could still be "The Future of the Middleweight
Division" as projected when he turned pro but, at
least for the immediate future, he'll continue
campaigning as a super middleweight.
The Dominican Republic-born Rodriguez (13-0, 9
KOs), fighting out of Worcester (MA), is set for
nationally televised debut March 19 in an 8-round
super middleweight bout versus veteran
George "The Rooster" Armenta
on ESPN Friday Night Fights,
live from Choctaw Gaming Center in Durant,
Oklahoma.
Rodriguez, who was the 2005 USA
Boxing National Championships and 2006 U.S.
National Golden Gloves Tournament gold medalist,
has fought as light as 162 pounds with a high of
168 in his last fight, a fifth-round technical
knockout of Brian Norman last November.

"We're proud to present our first ShoBox event and we promise that fans will see the quality of

Oscar de la Hoya, President of Golden

"Danny Perez will be Erislandy Lara's toughest test to date and a fight I'm

excited to see Carlos Velasquez back in the ring and if
he can be impressive on April 2 on ShoBox,
the sky's the limit for him."

Night Twin Bill a Twin Thriller... by George Elsasser
Last night Showtime ShoBox "New
Generation" delivered us fight fans a twin bill thriller
that had the paying customers at the Agua Caliente
Casino, Rancho Mirage, California pleased as a pig in
bleep - well, for most of the night.
Show opens with a non-stop action
affair for the IBO lightweight strap - and "action"
doesn't come close - Fernando Angulo enters the favorite
although taking the fight on 12 days notice - also
arrives at 22-6, 14 stoppages.
The underdog from "Down Under"
country, Lenny Zappavigna arrives unbeaten at 22 wins
with 15 via KO - and on paper the advantage of younger
age 22 vs. 29.

Al Bernstein Hosts
March 12 Crown Boxing...
Hall of Fame boxing
announcer Al Bernstein will again serve as official host
for the next Crown Boxing Friday Night Fights, March 12
at the Orleans Hotel and Casino.
Al will be on hand to
interact with fans, sign autographs and make himself
available for photo opportunities. The six bout card
features Las Vegas battler Brian Battease against Alex
Martinez in a lightweight match, but Al points out that
the value of Crown boxing goes well beyond the main
event.
Featherweight
Prospect Coy "Pretty Boy" Evans Remains Undefeated...
This past Saturday night at The Roadway Inn in
Allentown, PA., one of the most exciting up and coming
prospects, Coy "Pretty Boy" Evans, remained
undefeated with a six round unanimous decision over tough
veteran Robert DaLuz.
In the fight, Evans showed lightning quick hands and
divided his shots up nicely between the head and body of
DaLuz..
Evans dominated the action by winning every round on all
three judges score cards to the tune of 60-54 across the
board.
Camacho, Maddalone
Score Impressive Stoppages in Atlantic City...
On Saturday night, at the Tropicana Casino and Resort in Atlantic
City, NJ, Joe DeGuardia's Star Boxing presented a thrilling,
action-packed night of professional boxing, that had the packed house
in attendance asking for more. The five bout card was headlined by
Atlantic City's own, Shamone "The Truth" Alvarez taking on hard
hitting Alexis Camacho.
Alvarez and Camacho wasted no time getting acquainted, as they both
came out in the first firing.
In the 2nd, the southpaw Alvarez began finding the range for his left
hand, landing two short overhand lefts that rocked Camacho.
As the fight progressed from each round to the next, Alvarez got
stronger and stronger. To Camacho's credit, he showed guts, and a
very good chin, as he continued to press forward as Alvarez's punches
found their mark time and time again.
R.I.P. Mike Dietrich... by Edward Ericson Jr.
Baltimore Boxer Mike "The American Dream" Dietrich, who
survived a 2005 stabbing to establish a professional
record of 12-1, died
suddenly yesterday. Details are unavailable so far; a man
who answers the phone at Baltimore Boxing and Fitness, the
Broadway gym where Dietrich trained, says Dietrich had
gone six rounds there the day before in preparation for a
scheduled March 20 heavyweight fight against Wes Taylor.
Honorio Batters Hilario; Ramos KO Winner Over Santos on ESPN FNF... by Larry Flores
Both Martin Honorio and Rico "Suavecito" Ramos made a
statement in their ESPN Friday Night Fights national television appearance from
the Pechanga Resort and Casino in Temecula, California with decisive wins.
With his one-sided victory, Mexico's Honorio has given notice that at
30-years-old he's still a legitimate threat to any of the top Super
Featherweight and Lightweight fighters. The 22-year-old Ramos established
himself as a serious prospect who bears watching with a devastating KO victory.
In the main event of ESPN's FNF card, Mexico's Honorio (27-4 with 14
KOs) defended his WBO NABO Lightweight title with a one-sided battering of
unbeaten Wilton "Pretty Warrior" Hilario (12-0-1 with 9 KOs) of the Dominican
Republic.
Honorio by
Unanimous Decision; Ramos via KO... by George Elsasser
ESPN FNF from Pechanga Resort/Casino
at Temecula, California showcased defending NABO
lightweight champion Martin Honorio in a lopsided
decision win over game but outclassed Wilton Hilario.
Honorio delivered the goods as if
choreographed - not only does he toss a shutout on one
judge's report card to the tune of 120-106 - but also
caught the eye of the other two scorers in like 119-107
fashion.
My scribble agreed Honorio 119-107 in
points and 11-1 under the round by method.
Rest of the story is the unbeaten
Hilario, while arriving on paper at 12-0-1, with nine
kayos, the scalps taken were strictly minor league
entities - but on this night the challenging Dominican's
one dimensional attacking style would fail miserably.
Honorio dominates on ESPN2 FNF.... by Kenny Perrault
Martin Honorio made easy work of Wilton Hilario tonight on ESPN2 Friday Night
Fights. From the opening bell Hilario was the aggressor constantly moving
forward. The problem being Wilton offered no jabs and once he found himself on
the inside he had little offense.
One on one with
WBC President Jose Sulaiman... by Ricky Ray Taylor
I recently had a Q & A with long time World Boxing
Council President JOSE SULAIMAN. It was certainly an
honor to pick the brain of such a distinguished leader in
our beloved sport. Mr. Sulaiman has introduced a number
of innovations during his tenure as WBC president most of
which are still in place today, including the four-roped
ring, thumbless gloves, weigh-ins 24 hours before bouts,
and the reduction of the championship distance from 15 to
12 rounds.
For his dynamic efforts in advancing our sport he
was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2007.
Ten Rounds... the
"Real Deal" ... by Tony Montgomery
Round 1:
Love the heavyweights of the 1990's? Always wanted to
see Evander Holyfield and Frans Botha get it on? Thanks
to the Nevada State Athletic Commission for granting the
"Real Deal" a license to fight you may just get your
wish. Holyfield is damn near 50 years old and Botha's
best was last seen over a decade ago. Perhaps the winner
should get in the ring with Tyson. I should be careful
what I wish for. What I'm trying to say is don't waste
your time and watch or support this "fight," and
don't spend a dime on in it.
Pacquiao and Clottey: "The Event" - live from Arlington, Texas, March 13th...
by Ricky Ray Taylor
Clottey, the WBO's No.1 contender - is squared up against
the undisputed P4P World Champion, Pacquiao. On paper this looks like a dream
match up. With 59 knockouts between them and a loyal contingency of
Boxing-faithful in hot pursuit of each man's next move, one can only assume that
this fight has been in the making for years.
This is far from the truth however, and Floyd "Money" Mayweather can
attest to it. Nonetheless, the fight-game rolls on..
At the
moment, Manny Pacquiao is the most recognizable and most
prominent face in Boxing.
Pacquiao - Clottey PPV Undercard Action...
Welterweight Jose Luis Castillo (60-9-1, 52 KOs), two-time world champion
currently ranked WBC #9 will take on Alfonso Gomez (21-4-2), who is ranked WBC
#10, WBO #10, starred in the first season of "The Contender" and is coming off a
victory over Jesus Soto-Karass.
Middleweight contender John Duddy (28-1, 18 KOs) will meet Michael Medina (22-1-2, 17 KOs).
Unbeaten super bantamweight Roberto Marroquin (11-0, 8 KOs) will also see action.
In addition, Top Rank will feature featherweight Salvador Sanchez (18-3-2, 8 KOs) nephew and namesake of the former world
champion, on its international broadcast.
Jones-Hopkins: The Worst Side of Boxing ...
by Dr. Margaret Goodman
When a past-his-prime Roy Jones Jr. faces Bernard Hopkins at Nevada's Mandalay
Bay on April 3rd, there will be lots of blame to go around. But, none bare as
much responsibility as the Nevada State Athletic Commission, who will
demonstrate they have become a shadow of their former self by licensing Jones to
compete.
I am not saying that Hopkins-Jones cannot be an exciting, competitive bout, nor
am I saying that Jones can't beat Hopkins. But, Jones' decline in skill speaks
for itself!
Ex-boxer Morrison says he didn't know marijuana pipe was in car...
by Hurst Laviana
Former heavyweight champion Tommy Morrison said Friday that his arrest the night
before on marijuana charges caught him off guard.
"This is one of those situations where it's not what it seems," he said.
Jack Obermayer Undergoes Surgery in Philadelphia...
A former amateur fighter and native of Staten Island, New York, Jack Obermayer had
been going to fights since 1963.
A veteran of 23 amateur fights, of which he won 16, Obermayer never had any
illusions about turning pro, even though he patterned his stance after Joey
Archer.
No Holds Barred:
Mayweather-Mosley and Drug Testing... by Eddie Goldman
On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman provides a candid and unvarnished report from the Floyd Mayweather Jr.-Shane
Mosley kickoff news conference, the kind you will not see or hear from the bought-off and clueless boxing media.
We focused on the issue of drug testing, since the proposed fight between Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao was cancelled because the
Pacquiao camp refused to undergo the type of anti-doping procedures which are done in the Olympics. Mayweather then signed to fight Mosley
May 1 in Las Vegas, Nevada, with an announced stipulation that both fighters would indeed have to follow the guidelines of the World Anti-
Doping Agency, and not just the much weaker and effectively obsolete testing done by the Nevada State Athletic Commission.
Can't Blame
Hopkins for Taking the Jones Jr. Fight... by Jason Snowden
I can certainly see Bernard Hopkins beating Roy Jones Jr.
with ease and avenging that fight in 1993. It will still
get people tuning in but a lot won't bother, I probably
won't have much choice as I doubt the U.K. networks will
cover it.
On a personal note, I will be at the MEN Arena
that night watching Hopkins's next opponent David Haye
This is not a great fight; it will not be a great fight to watch
and it certainly won't do any record breaking PPV figures.
"Kolle-Vanda 2" live on April 2nd from the Grand Casino in
Hinckley, Minnesota...
Defending Minnesota State Middleweight Champion Andy "Kaos"
Kolle makes the first defense of the crown he earned by
knocking out Anthony Bonsante last March as he takes on
Matt "The Predator" Vanda, who looks to avenge his close
loss to Kolle from 2007. The main event will be 10 rounds
in the middleweight division.
In undercard action, Minnesota's most decorated and fastest
rising prospect Javontae Starks takes on his toughest
competition yet as he goes against St. Paul bad boy Bobby
"Sweet Dreams" Kliewer in a 6 round bout at 154 lbs.
News from Europe... by Per Ake Persson
Universum Box
Promotions returns in April with two events which will take
place within a week of each other. April 17 in Magdeburg,
Universum joins forces with SES for a show headlined by WBC
interim middleweight champ Sebastian Zbik who again will
take on Italian Domenico Spada. Zbik won a very close
decision the first time out to win the title but many
observers felt Spada had nicked it.
Miami's Frankie
Otero to be Enshrined in Florida's Boxing Hall of Fame...
by Larry
Flores
Cuban born
Frankie Otero, a former NABF Super Featherweight champion,
was one of the most popular fighters in South Florida
throughout his 10-year boxing career. The overflow crowds
attending his fights, and the support he received from the
boxing community in Miami, were a clear testament to his
popularity and drawing power. Excitement and non-stop
action were ingredients in all of his matches.
Little did he
know that the exclamation point to his boxing career would
be his induction into the newly created Florida Boxing
Hall of Fame.

Kessler - Froch
heats up Saturday, April 24th on Showtime!
Mikkel
Kessler (42-2, 32 KOs) and World Boxing Council
(WBC) super middleweight champion Carl Froch
(26-0, 20 KOs) kicked off an international media tour here
Wednesday morning to discuss their upcoming Group Stage 2 bout in the Super Six
World Boxing Classic on Saturday, April 24 on SHOWTIME at 9 p.m. ET/PT.
Known as "The Viking Warrior," Denmark's Kessler will be
counting on the support of his home fans when he challenges
Froch, of Nottingham, England, for the WBC 168-pound crown
in a 12-round match at MCH Herning.
After one round in the Super Six, "King" Carl has two
points, while Kessler needs a victory to get on the board.
Mayweather's
Signature Seals the
Deal - Fighters Agree to Participate in Olympic-Style Drug Testing, Mega Fight
Set for May 1st, Live on HBO PPV...
It's official. Boxing's biggest superstar
and six-time world champion Floyd "Money" Mayweather made his upcoming fight
with welterweight mega-star and five-time world champion Sugar Shane Mosley,
official today when he signed the contract that pits the two fighters against
each other on Saturday, May 1 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas in a mega-bout which
will be televised live on HBO Pay-Per-View.
"This one is definitely for the
fans as I wasn't going to waste anyone's time with a meaningless tune-up bout
and asked to fight Shane immediately," said Mayweather. "I have said ever since
I came back to the sport that I only wanted to fight the best. I think Shane is
one of the best, but come May 1, he still won't be great enough to beat me."
