Harold Lederman and James Prince

By Saratogamist

We caught up to James Prince and Harold Lederman at the end of the Roy Jones Jr. - Glen "Kunga" Kelly press conference in Bayside, Miami. They seemed to be talking boxing with each other, and how could I not attempt to get a word from them?

This is what we talked about on this beautiful and sunny January afternoon...oh, and may I add that Mr. Lederman delivered his answers in the same excited manner in which he gives Jim (Lampley) his unofficial scores. HBO's unofficial official leaves you breathless!

BRC: Harold, care to give me a prediction for Saturday night?

LEDERMAN: Yeah, in the summertime we are going to have a big fight between Carl Daniels and Glen Kelly, and the 'Black Rhino' is going to steal the show now that he is back on HBO...

BRC: I take it that you are not going to give me a prediction for Saturday night...

LEDERMAN: Well, listen, you gotta like the number one fighter pound for pound in the world. Certainly my man here, (referring to James Prince), his fighter Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Roy Jones Jr. are right now running one-two as best fighters in the world without question. After Shane Mosley's loss I think that there is very little doubt that they are the two best fighters in the world.

We are looking forward to another sensational performance from Roy; hopefully a sensational performance against a tough opponent by Bernard Hopkins and maybe this summer they can get together.

As far as Floyd, my God, there are some great fights for Floyd out there....Acelino Freitas, José Luis Castillo, Stevie Johnston, great fights there... As you may well know Prince Hamed is coming back against Miguel Calvo; it looks as if Felix Trinidad is going to be coming back, I presume, in April...some great fights out there and I'm sorry about what happened in New York because I was really looking forward to Tyson-Lewis, I guess everybody was, but still and all, there are some great fights coming up specially in the lighter divisions....Joel Casamayor showed that he is a great champion, even though he didn't get the decision, most people thought he deserved it, the referee-ing certainly hurt him without question; and we have some awful good fights at 130, 135 and at 140 we all know there are some awful good fights out there with Kostya Tszyu.

It's going to be a dynamite spring on HBO and I'm just looking forward to some of the great bouts we got coming up.

BRC: How do you feel about the stand taken by the Nevada State Athletic Commission in denying Mike Tyson a license?

LEDERMAN: As far as I am concerned, they did what they had to do. I never gave it much thought as to what I would do if I was in the same position, I mean, if that's the way they feel, that's what they had to do. There have been some incidents with Mike Tyson before and unfortunately, that's what happened.

I, personally, am still looking forward to the fight, I think it's going to be a great fight. I'm a boxing person, I want to see those two guys get in the ring, I mean, I'll overlook Mike's indiscretions, I just hope that nothing happens with that rape charge they are talking about... I hope he can go, let's say, to Michigan and they'll give him a license, possibly Great Britain, or wherever and we can get the fight on. Because you know it took so long to get SHOWTIME and HBO together on this deal...we finally struck a deal, it's all set to get done, it looked like a $20 million dollar payday for each guy, they were talking anywhere upwards of $300 million in one night which is almost as much money as they generate with a James Prince rap concert, (Prince, Harold and I crack up at this remark), there would have been a great post fight party, just like the James Prince post fight parties...and I gotta tell you I'm terribly disappointed.

Mike fought sixteen times on HBO, his career started on HBO, so I love Mike Tyson, I always got along with him...I just hope they put it together 'cause I wanna see the fight, I'm a fight guy. I've seen a lot of guys get excited and blow up at a press conference. I've seen Muhammad Ali when he threw glassware at George Foreman, come on, this is boxing, you know! It sells tickets, people love it, so let'em fight...

BRC: What does Mr. Prince have to say about that? Same question...

PRINCE: I mean, I just wanna see the fight, I don't care if it's in Vegas, New York, wherever, I just wanna see the fight. I think eventually the fight will take place.

BRC: So, tell me about "Bones" Adams?

PRINCE: Bones is presently in Houston sparring with a couple of guys preparing for Paulie Ayala on the 23rd, and we look forward to getting revenge on that day because personally I feel he won the last fight so I have a double-header-revenge that we need to get on that day. Mike "2 Sharp" Johnson also defeated his guy and they took that fight from us, so, it's gonna be a big night for us.

BRC: What about Winky Wright on Saturday? How do you see his fight happening?

PRINCE: Winky will be victorious on Saturday night. I wouldn't be surprised if he knocks this guy out, so we look forward to the winner of Oscar and Vargas.

BRC: Do you feel that Mosley's loss has thrown a monkey wrench in the plans for what could have been a tournament similar to the one the middleweights had?

PRINCE: I wouldn't necessarily say he threw a monkey wrench in the program. It just goes to show you that anybody can be whooped. This is what boxing needed, you know. Shane has been winning a long time, and Vernon had been waiting a long time and of course, I know that you are aware that we kinda sent him to the wolf. Of course Winky would have beaten him too, but we kinda sent him Vernon, he had been waiting so long, so I just feel that was destiny, it was meant to take place.

BRC: So, the winner of Oscar de la Hoya vs Fernando Vargas is the next step for Winky, assuming he gets by Jason Papillion on Saturday?

PRINCE: Yes, that is our plan.

BRC: Thank you Harold, thank you James, this was fun, we must do it again.
