Yesterday welterweight giants WBA welterweight Champion Miguel
Cotto (30-0, 36 KO’s) from Caguas, Puerto Rico and two-time
welterweight champion Antonio “The Tijuana Tornado” Margarito
(36-5, 26 KO’s) from Tijuana, Mexico, held court today at the Marc Ecko Enterprises in New York City to promote their upcoming
title fight billed “La Batalla,” Spanish for "The Battle" in the
MGM Grand of Las Vegas on July 26.
Bob Arum has been a witness to the Mexican and Puerto Rican
rivalry and believes that this fight is just as big or can even
be bigger than those events. Possibly the fight of the year,
this looks to be an intriguing match. Can Cotto deal with
Margarito’s constant pressure? Can Margarito dish enough
punishment to stop the Puerto Rican superstar?
A win for either fighter will elevate them to the top of the
heap in the welterweight division. Maybe, just maybe, putting
themselves in line to fight Floyd Mayweather who is having a
rematch with Oscar De La Hoya this September.
