It was Allan Green by unanimous decision over
a tentative Rubin Williams in last night’s ESPN FNF super
middleweight mismatch from Oklahoma country.
Green held the strong hand from start to
finish as he worked behind a strong left hand jab that dictated
the pace - marring the expected action was in seeing both
fighters working in counter punch style - so much for styles
making fights.
The bigger culprit was Williams, who remained
in a survival mode over most ten candles - irony is his being
dropped in stanza nine by a stiff jab that carried the today
ludicrous 10-8 stanza for Green due to the “knockdown.”
Mattered not, as Green, more careful than in
his pre-Edison Miranda experience, played it close to the vest
as he chalked up round after round.
Scoring went Green 99-90, 99-89, 98-91 - my
unofficial saw it Green 98-91 in points and 8-2 under the round
by round method. How a single left jab catching an off balance
Williams resulting in uneventful late round knockdown
constitutes 10-8 baffles the mind. Fortunately, in this fight it
had no bearing on the outcome.
Post Scripts: Allan Green ( 16-1, 18 KO) ~
age 28, is well schooled in skills. Good size, coupled with
effective jab and power hook has the tools to compete with most
at 168 pounds. The Miranda defeat maybe has induced safety-first
in the complete picture - still, other than a Calzaghe, the
Tulsa talent is an honest bet for those that wager on
pro-boxing.
Rubin Williams (29-3, 16 KO) ~ age 31, but
works at pace more reserved for the 35-40 today groupies. In
appearance settled for also-ran from start to finish. Suited for
the “Hollywood” sobriquet to the letter.
Referee Steve Smoger ~ finally, a third man
in charge that didn’t infringe while letting it play out without
dramatics and choreography. The new Smoger a strong improvement
over the former “Body Bag” version of yesteryear - also better
than most we the fight fan are stuck with today.
