The ESPN FNF offering between Juan Urango and Hermann Ngoudjo for the vacant IBF Jr. Welter bauble was billed as a classic boxer vs. puncher affair - then the opening bell and the Urango power punching caught the eye.

Ngoudjo displayed heart in going the distance - but a nasty stanza three saw the lighter punching local via Cameroon down twice - first trip courtesy of a Urango left uppercut and then again from a finishing right hand.

The scoring went lopsided for the port side Colombian bomb thrower to the unanimous tune of 120-106, 118-108, 116-110 - it also translated to three scoring judges favoring the puncher over the boxer, also known as beauty is in the eyes of the beholder.

My unofficial tabulations saw it much closer - had it Urango 114-112 in points and all square at 6-6 using the yesterday round by round method.

While Urango’s non-stop aggressive style caught the eye, he missed the target on more occasions than finding the mark - still, the stanza three 10-7 round paid dividends on my unofficial.

Post Scripts:

  • Juan Urango (21-1-1, 16 KO) ~ age 28 - what you see is what you get, fan favorite in style crowd pleaser. The reign likely a short one if not choosing opponents carefully. A fan dream pairing would be a defense with fellow Colombian bomb-thrower Ricardo Torres (32-2, 28 KO) the challenger.

  • Hermann Ngoudjo (17-3, 9 KO) ~ age 29 - shortage of punching power too big an albatross to grab the brass ring - big heart and while more boxer than puncher he chooses not to run. Future is yesterday.

Passing thoughts: As a past ice hockey fan, I recall the Canadian national anthem prior to the dropping of the cup beginning with “Oh Canada” - seeing Montreal hack Gerry Bolen as third man in the ring for the NABO welter club fight title the anthem takes on a whole different meaning. Undefeated local Anton DeCarrie 21-0, 6 KO’s is tossing a shutout over washed up veteran Dorin Spivey and Bolen debits Spivey points for holding in rounds six and eight. For what it’s worth DeCarrie has no future - punches as hard as my sister Maureen.  Short notice Spivey age 35 was there for the paycheck - no need for the penalties.

Brian Kenny studio guest Bernardo Osuna - call it a bonus. Guy is top of the line. Teddy Atlas on the money with evaluation of Anton De Carrie - punchers are born - kid in trouble once stepping up a rung on the ladder.
