The Friday noche September 14 Telefutura show delivered a
mixed bag of entertainment, with a Trejo backside roll over
rounds five thru nine the margin of victory over Puerto Rico’s
Juan Cruz in the main event.
Opens with super bantamweight co-feature Francisco Rodriguez
vs Ivan Rodriguez - a pairing that went non-stop before
aborted by medic in charge end of stanza six with Ivan’s left
eye completely shut.
My unofficial had it all Francisco from the start albeit hotly
contested by a lesser skilled but game Ivan - difference was
the taller Francisco quickness and effective switch from
orthodox to port side finding the mark.
Ivan placed his hopes more on "Hail Mary" left hook coupled
with today version of the yesteryear lightweight champion
Paddy DeMarco infamous "Billygoat" approach.
The Ivan interest waned a bit when a cut to the left eye and
subsequent swelling began during stanza four - eye began
closing over five and then a total shutdown by end of round
six and the stoppage.
Post Scripts: Francisco Rodriguez (10-1, 7 KO) ~ age 23 - not
the puncher the seven by knockout in a now eleven outings
suggest - in a hotbed of talent at super bantamweight the
needed power for respect is missing. Top of the line club
fight material the likely future.
Ivan Rodriguez (8-4, 3 KO) ~ age 26 the
hint things can only get worse down that proverbial pike.
Physically impressive - but then the opening bell quickly
tarnishes the image.
………………………………..........................................................................
The Trejo-Cruz affair showed promise over the opening four
stanzas - the age 33 veteran Trejo grabs numero uno with good
combinations as Cruz went the feeling out route.
Then it‘s Cruz picking up the pace in two - a busy stanza that
saw both in willing exchanges - and after four it’s pretty
much all square - and then number five and a bit of slapstick
- a Cruz left hand scores below the DMZ - and the Trejo
reaction is the Puerto Rican just stole his manhood.
The rest and recuperation lasted long enough I had thoughts of
taking an early evening nap, and maybe awakening in time to
catch number six - finally, the show continues and there’s
third hack in charge Geno Rodriguez with a Cruz debit for low
blow in round six.
A frustrated Cruz abandons the body punching in seven and it’s
a big Trejo stanza that sees Cruz shaky courtesy of Trejo
left hooks.
Goes the distance with Trejo a unanimous decision winner to
the tune of 97-92. 97-92, 95-94 - my unofficial agreed Trejo
97-92 in points and 7-3 in rounds.
Post Scripts: Fernando Trejo (29-11-4, 17 KOs) ~ age 33 the
albatross - the resumé tells rest of the story. Near dozen
losses has him certified Triple A talent. Not explosive
puncher but combinations impressive. Think better fitting "Foulproof
Taylor" harness and metal cup a must if continuing at this
late point in time. Them low blows were not as far south as
Pusan.
Juan Cruz (15-4-1, 11 KO) ~ age 29 - no
kid but showed enough to be competitive - let the hometown
hack man in charge get the best of him with the point
deduction. Did come alive and finished on a positive final
stanza note.
Too little too late.
The Referees report: Rodriguez prelim
man in charge Gerald Scott went through the mechanics but for
the most part caused no damage - the warnings never slowed the
ring action. Passing grades.
Geno Rodriguez: Worked as if relieved
he hadn’t left his carcass down at Colombia country in that
blind man act when working the Torres-Holt atrocity - on that
night never once saw the flying cans of beer, ice - nor corner
personnel grabbing the Yankee dog visitor’s feet. Showed no
fear on home turf - quickly docked the Puerto Rican visitor to
second city Chicago, Cruz, a point in stanza six for low
blow.
