With ESPN2 on a couple weeks hiatus from pro fighting, boxing fans were treated to couple old time eight round club fights - where the winners eventually end up is anyone's guess, but they came to fight.

Show opens with lightweights Mercito Gesta of Cebu in the Philippines - an unbeaten solidly constructed southpaw loaded with confidence in demeanor, in with age 35 veteran Genaro Trazancos of Fort Myers, FL via Mexico City.

The younger Gesta owned the better moves, and at age 22 was the far quicker in all departments - Trazancos gave it his best, but the job application of 22-11-1, 13 KOs carried an asterisk that hinted of rest of the story - the veteran arrived off six losses in last seven outings.

Gesta used the tv exposure to showcase an array of assorted combinations coupled with solid defense when Trazancos rallied in stanza six with desperate barrage of his own to no avail.

The one sided affair closed suddenly at the 53 seconds mark of candle seven courtesy of a Gesta blistering straight left hand to the chin - Trazancos stiffened upright before falling on his back and never made a move to recover.

Post Scripts: Mercito Gesta ( 19-0-1, 9 KOs) ~ age 22 - currently rated WBO #14 which sounds reasonable - but "brain trust" has itself more an entertaining hot prospect than title contender. Still, circle the name Gesta, the kid can fight.

Genaro Trazancos (22-12-1, 13 KOs) ~ age 35 - clearly on the wrong side of the slope - no fear but as this one-sided affair was nearing the deep water, resignation /desperation was visible to the viewer.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The co-feature proved to be a shocker on paper; a featherweight affair with age 30 veteran Adolfo Landeros (20-14-1, 9 KOs), in with age 21, rookie Noe Lopez with tarnished rap sheet at 5-5, 4 KOs.

Then the bell and the Sonora, Mexico kid the quicker out of the gate - using the speed and port side deliveries to advantage as the veteran used the stanza taking notes.

Then numero dos - Lopez opts to bring the action to the inside - a two punch combination to the body brings the Landeros guard down and is quickly topped with a left hand to the head and Landeros is down.

Surprisingly this one would go the full eight rounds - no surprise all official scorers had it Lopez 80-71, 79-72, 79-72 - my unofficial numbers agreed Lopez 79-72 in points and 7-1 under round by round method.

Post Scripts: Noe Lopez Jr. (6-5, 4 KOs) ~ age 21 -  kid looks like he needs a decent meal -  but not short of heart, guts, and apparently is decent puncher that complements the quickness. Chin not tested in this outing. Featherweight division loaded. Meanwhile don't bet the rent money just yet.

Adolfo Landeros (20-15-1, 9 KOs) ~ age 30 - best advice here is the veteran should call career a no-mas. Is now oh-4 in last four outings.

Closing thoughts: Pleasant surprise here was seeing that dynamite team doing commentary - recall the faces but do not speak the language - still, no need as they are that good.
