SOLO BOXEO FRIDAY MAIN EVENT AN OFF-BROADWAY BOMB

I enjoy the Telefutura Solo Boxeo productions - whether small club titles on the line or simply ten round club fights, they’ve routinely spawned spirited ring action.

Not being familiar with last noche’s super-lightweight main event featuring Rogelio Castaneda Jr. and Ubaldo Hernandez, I visited BoxRec.com for clues on what to expect come the opening bell.

The respective resumé of both transplanted Mexicans, Castaneda of Sacramento, California via Tijuana and Hernandez of Fort Myers, Florida by way of Mexico City left much to be desired - Rogelio at 23-13, 8 KO’s, Ubaldo equally ugly at 22-18, 10 by stoppage.

No harm done I thought - seeing both similar in age at 30-31 - the guess was we could expect another competitive affair - but then the amber light - compounding the debits is Castaneda riding a three bout losing streak - and Hernandez losing ten of his last 14.

Took no more than halfway mark of stanza one to see the equivalent of a fight version of an Off-Broadway bomb - the styles matched to the letter, with both seeking not to offend - we’re talking counter punchers refusing to punch.

Had this offering included background music the lyrics would be from an oldie that went “Let me call you sweetheart” - or something similar.

While both gladiators were equally guilty of ten stanzas of non-violence - the skills were AWOL - there was a couple of Castaneda inadvertent head butts that had Hernandez instantly converting from pacifist to thespian - and quickly turned to hack in charge Dan Stell for help.

The first two pleas fell short of the mark - the best dumb Danny the ref did was give Ubaldo a few seconds of R&R - but the third meeting of the mind sprung Stell into action - and debits Castaneda a point for the infraction.

Problem is there was no infraction - the collision was the result of a set of awkward bodies coming together - both moving to close quarters with Hernandez standing erect and Castaneda bending from the waist.

Whatever, no real damage done - in this one there was no chance of a winner - neither Castaneda, who got the “W” on all scorecards 97-93, 96-93, 95-94 or Hernandez has a future at this point.
………………………………...............................................................................................

Wasn’t a total flop this Telefutura card - stealing the show, was a featherweight clash between Roger Gonzalez and Adolfo Landeros in a dandy ten round co-feature that went the distance.

Gonzalez had the far better skills, but Landeros was equal in the heart department - battered over the opening five stanzas - dropped by left hook while at close quarters in stanza five - he would make many of the later rounds something of a coin flip.

It would go to the judges, with Gonzalez the winner via unanimous decision 98-91, 98-91, 97-92 -  although both fighters came ready to make war - major difference was in the skills department that clearly favored Gonzalez.

Gonzalez ( age 29) now at 27-1, 18 KO - and Landeros (age 27) drops to 18-8-1, 9 KO - neither fighters showed the needed punching power to successfully take it to the next level but are worth the price of admission.

Referee report: Semi-final man in charge Marcos Rosales earned better grades than feature arbiter Dan Stell.
