There was nothing dull about last noche’s Sho-Box offering from Foxwood’s
Resort, in Connecticut that featured a quartet of undefeated jr. middleweights - and when
the firefighting ceased it was Sechew Powell and Yuri Foreman remaining
untarnished.
Opener was an 8-rounder with Foreman (18-0, 7) tossing a shutout over Kevin
Cagle who entered the fray at 16-0, 12 KOs but was clearly in over his head in
this one.
Yuri from Brooklyn, USA via the Belarus - Israel route displayed the far better
skills in technique than a more amateur in style albeit gamer in Cagle.
Foreman’s movement baffled the wild winging Cagle, who pretty much fanned on
most of his offensive offerings.
Foreman came out with the unanimous blanking but also finished with a cut
alongside the right eye, courtesy of a second stanza inadvertent clash of heads.
Still, it never once hindered the busy combination-puncher as he went from head
to body with assorted punches from start to finish.
All three scorers had it 80-72 ... Doubt there was a single dissenter in the
house.
Post Scripts: Foreman ~ Still a young one at 24 with room to grow. The skills
are visible in the quickness and movement departments. Lacks clout which could
be improved with work on the deliveries. At this time prognosis is ESPN-Sho-Box
level commodity.
Cagle ~ First peek at the young age 25 Carolinian -
appears them 16 with 12 knockout priors were strictly result of home cooking.
Early on, the kid was willing enough although unable to put any punches
together. Everything from both sides carried "Hail Mary" all over it - and she
wasn’t listening.
Main event between Sechew Powell (16-0, 10) and Cornelius Bundrage (21-0, 13)
provided entertainment of a whole different kind.
No sooner the opening bell and both come together with a respective power punch
… and similar to an old 3-Stooges flick, they both are immediately seen falling
backwards while landing on the derriere.
In a flash they're on their feet and it’s Powell scoring with a straight
left-hand sizzler to the soft spot and now Bundrage hit’s the canvas and is in
trouble.
The Detroiter beats the count on legs of cooked spaghetti and stumbles to the
canvas again … and second effort sees the legs betray him again and referee Dick
Flaherty quickly waves it off.
Closing Comments ~ This one ended at 22 seconds mark of opening stanza and
really offered nothing to go on to extract either a positive or negative. Powell
still a young age 25 with possibilities … good size and works from the port side
… the curtain closer was a perfect connection so whether the power is legit is
still a question mark.
Cornelius Brundage at age 32 and in what was his
22nd fight is likely less a talent than most names that arrive in the east from
the celebrated Kronk Gym out in Detroit city. Corny Cornelius seemed to enter
this one with a bit too much pre-fite choreography and not enuf fistic
preparation.
P.S. - This Sho-Box offering earns kudos in tossing the uninitiated a reminder
that all unblemished resumés are not created equal.
