The Telefutura "Boxeo" Friday nite super featherweight
offering was a laugher - at least, for the main event winner
Guadalupe Rosales, who blanked chosen victim Marcos Licona
over ten one-sided stanzas.
Unanimous scoring went 100-90 on all ballots - if not a
perfect game it did come close - my unofficial had it
Rosales 99-91 on points, and 9-1 using the yesterday tried
and trusted round by round method.
The pre-fight peek at the respective stats shouted mismatch
- Rosales resumé had him arriving on 18 bout winning streak
- Licona on four bout losing streak; Rosales age 26 - Licona
age 32; toss in Rosales the taller.
Translation a likely mismatch in the offering - then the
opening bell and the proof in the pugilistic pudding.
Rosales opens with a version of the Nathan's’ Hot-Dog of
Coney Island fame - but this Mexican, hot tamale or not, was
no hot dish of chopped meat and crushed peppers - and he
quickly dominates the ring action.
Stanza two, following a corner lecture on tempering the
showboating, the kid quickly advertises a loaded trick bag
of skills - composed, but quick of hands - jabs, hooks from
the port side and assorted right hands that hardly miss the
target.
Maybe, on my card the shorter Licona steals round three, but
from then on only courage and strong chin construction kept
the transplanted Mexican on his feet - closes with Licona
clearly a bloody and beaten entity.
Post Scripts: Rosales (25-1, 17 KO) ~ age 26 - lacks
one-punch knockout power but gets the job done with volleys
of combinations, and excellent accuracy. The single debit
via 8-round split decision back in 2002. Rest of story comes
once stepping up in talent among the assorted evil ones at
130 and above.
Licona (23-10-1, 8 KO) ~ age 32 - a
warrior cursed at birth without punching power - toss in
giving advantages of height-reach compounds the limitations.
Time to ride off into the sunset.

Semi-final
welterweight attraction saw a good looking talent in Mike
Alvarado stopping a game but outgunned Jorge Padilla at the
2:40 mark of stanza eight.
Opening stanza quickly hinted how this one should play out -
Alvarado undefeated at 17 wins with 11 by stoppage, held
the hot hand with much bigger punching power than a willing
Padilla with 7-3-3, 1 KO journeyman scribbled over it.
But give the shortchanged Padilla the proverbial A for
effort round after round - down in stanza two via
flash-variety and unhurt, he quickly engages Alvarado in
round three with hot exchanges.
Wobbled in stanza six courtesy of Alvarado left hooks he
manages to battle back - and candle seven sees the underdog
grabbing the round when Alvarado slows the output after
inadvertent thumb in the eye.
Finally, stanza eight and the Padilla gas tank on empty -
wobbled and ready to go - beginning of end a big right hand
and referee Gerald Scott pulls the plug at 2:40 seconds
mark.
Post Scripts: Mike Alvarado (18-0, 12 KO) ~ age 27 - calls
Denver, Colorado home and untested to date - time to step
up, but says here with care. The welters at next rung a
tough breed. Looked solid in body and skills, decent
punching power but jury still out.
Padilla ( 7-4-3, 1 KO) - age 28 -
young enough to continue at club fight level - too willing
to go head to head with superior power punching opponents.
Brain trust needs reevaluation.
Referees of the night: Gerald Scott
worked the prelim and far superior to main event man in
charge Pete Podgorski.
