The ESPN2 -FNF- from the Mohegan Sun Casino at
Uncasville, Connecticut for the USBA welter strap, on paper had action club fight
written over it - even with Delvin Rodriguez arriving on losses to
opponents bearing surnames Jackiewicz and Hiatshwayo, and Arnaoutis a
blown up junior welter, entering off decision loss to somebody named Tim
Coleman.
Rodriguez, the taller at six feet has proven
effective at the small club level using the long left jab backed by a
power right hand - but on the other hand, he also has displayed a
chin possibly imported from the orient - Arnaoutis, the southpaw, the
underdog, arrives wearing the label punchers chance.
Then the opening bell with both assuming the counter
punch stance - plenty movement from both, but over the first three
stanzas not a single exchange - still, the Rodriguez left jab alone,
backed by more a feint with the celebrated right hand sees him up
three-oh.
On my unofficial tabs, it goes all Rodriguez over
four candles before the Greek steals numero cinco. By then, the paying
clientele was getting restless, and with it a loud Boo shout could be
heard from the cheap seats.
The halfway mark of numero six sees Rodriguez in
control behind the jab, straight right hand to the tune of five-one.
Number seven, and who better than house hack referee
in charge Danny Schiavone to pick up the sounds of the unhappy Boo-bird,
and is quickly on-the-job to debit Arnaoutis a point for a low blow that
had touched down at the DMZ.
Arnaoutis briefly gives offense a shot - was clear to
all the shorter Greek move and counter was going nowhere - and with the
bit of aggressiveness he claims round eight - but it would go to the
wire with Rodriguez comfortably ahead on all cards.
Official scorers saw it for the hometown favorite
(Rodriguez) 119-108, 118-109, 117-110 - and my unofficial numbers agreed
Rodriguez 117-110 in points and 9-3 in rounds.
Post Scripts: Delvin Rodriguez ( (25-4-2, 14 KOs) ~
age 29 @ 6 - not nearly complete at welterweight to successfully step
up to contention - the IBF has him at numero tres - problem is number
one and two rated slots are Vacant. So suggestion here is hold on to
the USBA version.
Mike Arnaoutis (22-5-2, 10 KOs) ~age 30 - southpaw
power hitter during younger days at 35-40 weight classes - action club
fighter but never made it to the top when meeting the Holt-Torres
levels. Not a legit welter today in size or substance.
Referee Danny Schiavone - a class clown that deserves
an assignment at the old Ridgewood Grove - but only because the Grove
has long been converted to a fruit store - Danny boy would fit in nicely
as a pineapple.

A six round Jr. Middleweight semi-final was more an
insult than a contest - Demetrius Andrade, a young age 22 tall lean
southpaw, enjoyed all the advantages over an age 36 non-entity Geoffrey
Spruiell who survived the distance but never claimed a single round.
The prospect, a nice kid judging by today
standards, conceded in pre-fight taped interview that hes still in
learning stage and not in a hurry to step up to serious competition.
On that note, maybe a name change from Demetrius to
George Washington Andrade for his honesty - while the kid goes to a now
10-0, 7 by KO - Id like seeing the chin construction tested by someone
other than slap-hapless Spruiell who dropped to under .500 with this
loss.
