The Showtime Shobox (New Generation) FNF way out at left
coast California country was the site of former WBO jr.
welter champ DeMarcus “Chop Chop” Corley vs. Freddy “El
Riel” Hernandez.
Hernandez age 30 of Mexico City, Mexico arrives at 27-1,
18 KO - along with height advantage at 5’10 to Corley’s
resume’ of 36-12-1, 21 KO - and age 35 on 5’7 frame.
Begins with Corley bringing it to the taller Hernandez in
typical “Chop-Chop” style - however Hernandez answers
back to grab the opening stanza - then a replay in number
two with Hernandez the more accurate.
Corley grabs number three in a close one to score -
credit the power shots to both body and head - and
suddenly we have a contest - again in candle four it’s
Corley and we have it a standoff at 38-38 in points and
two rounds apiece.
Then, at the midway mark of number cinco, it’s Hernandez
scoring with a monster right hand to the Corley jaw who
appears frozen for a couple seconds, before the feet give
out and he lands flat on his back - remains down and
motionless.
Enters the books at 1:48 of round 5.
Rest of the story: Freddy “El Riel” Hernandez - couldn’t
have looked better - still, the welter division is
stocked with loaded talent - forget the celebrated ones
with the trophies such as Andre Berto, Mosley, Pacquiao
and the inevitable Mayweather - but the contenders as
well with surnames Cotto; Margarito (of loaded wrappings”
infamy; Clottey, Judah and others, Still, at age 30 and
sparkling rap sheet of a now 28-1, 19KO’s he deserves a
spot among the top ten of whatever sanctioning body.
DeMarcus “Chop-Chop” Corley -
once king of the hill at 140, is no longer a title threat
at 147. He went down heavily and it could have been a
story with serious unhappy ending. The quote is he shall
return. Hopefully, someone with authority should do a
Harry Truman ala Gen Douglas A. MacArthur on him and pull
the plug.
