NO SURPRISES IN SHOWTIME CARD

By Geo Elsasser

Was with some interest I took a peek at the November 9 Showtime card featuring Sharmba Mitchell vs. Vince Phillips and to lesser degree the promising rookie Jeff Lacy facing Ross Thompson.

Was curious to see how Mitchell of wounded knee fame would hold up over the long haul against the old war horse "Cool" Vincent … and it held up just fine thank you, as Mitchell displayed the advantages of quickness, elusiveness and all around skills to baffle the ever trying Phillips.

Only error I caught on Sharmba’s part, was for some unexplained reason he began the seventh candle from the orthodox stance and quickly found himself on the receiving end of a Phillips right uppercut … but the light in the attic went on and he quickly re-assumed the southpaw advantage.

All and all it was a good, solid performance by a return to health Mitchell, that once again should place him among the Judahs, Vivians, Chop-Chops and other assorted forty-pounders in the Kostya Tszyu sweepstakes.

As for the likable Phillips, he can still become a force of sorts on a lower level … and pick up some good change while testing the new faces on the block … as in maybe a Sheffield, England attempted roadblock to the rise of young Ricky Hatton … not to mention the growing numbers of past local amateur stars seeking the pugilistic brass ring.

As for the Jeff Lacy and Ross Thompson duel for some synthetic WBC Continental Americas belt the best I can say is the "gimmes" continue for the promising future contender with the cute "left-hook" label.

Yes, he appears to bang with power from both sides of the plate … and no, he doesn't put them big punches together in bunches. Even when facing this latest "step up" in competition in Thompson.

Were Lacy a proven real deal his less than lethal last evening dance partner would not have been around for the final offering of good nite sweetheart … for Thompson was ready to be had long before the championship rounds of 10-11-12.

Good news for Lacy is there's still more than one trinket out there to be grabbed … as in WBA, WBC, IBF, WBO, etc, so he could well snatch one in the near future … i.e. if the brain trust choose the other guy carefully.
