RAEPH'S CHRISTMAS STOCKING GIFT LIST (HO, HO, HO) SUPER-SIX

By George Elsasser

Always look ahead to each month’s USA Today in search of Danny Boy’s generous opinionated offerings … hey, no other daily sports print scribbler gets the space Raef baby does.

That’s the good news.

For the rest of the story … the Super Six with his "Hits & Misses."

  • 1) Bernard Hopkins (45-2-1, 32 KOs)

Hits: Set up for life after boxing by becoming partner in Oscar de la Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions.
Misses: Big-money rematch with Trinidad will be a tough deal to make.
GEL: Keep it under the belt Danny Boy, but both are special enough to do just fine without a do over with one another.

  • 2) Floyd Mayweather Jr. (32-0, 21 KOs)

Hits: When you claim to be the best and then select uninspiring opponent as Henry Bruseles it’s hard to get excited about much.
Misses: Could have faced Mohammed Abdullaev or Lovemore N’Dou, who aren’t big names either, but at least more interesting than Bruseles.
GEL: Hello? Only a very select few at jr. welter & lightweight qualify sharing the dance floor with Floyd. Abdulah and Lovemore are not among them.

  • 3) Kostya Tszyu (31-1, 25 KOs )

Hits: Several good fights can be made for him - Cory Spinks, Jose Luis Castillo, Vivian Harris and Diego Corrales.
Misses: There are also bigger fights with Mayweather, Gatti and Miguel Cotto that are almost impossible to make because Tszyu is Showtime and others are HBO.
GEL: Regular name dropper aren’t you … under "hits" department scratch Cory Spinks who is full welter. Castillo, Harris, Corrales translates to piece of cake status. Re "misses" department, any fight worth making and under PPV banner can be made.

  • 4) Antonio Tarver (22-2, 18 KOs)

Hits: Stood up to sanctioning groups by giving up belt to fight Glen Johnson in only meaningful light heavy bout.
Misses: He worked hard for his title and should never have been put in position of choosing money over strap.
GEL: Danny, get a grip … someone see you sobbing, you could be replaced by Brian Kenny.  Look at it this way, couldn’t be a better scenario playing out than Tarver vs. Johnson whose stock soared to record high when both killed Superman. And neither needs purchasing them over priced leather straps with the engraved glitz. Only need is to satisfy the tax man.

  • 5) Winky Wright (48-3, 25 KOs )

Hits: Once again beat Shane Mosley to show his first dominant win was no accident.
Misses: Let Mosley get in several good shots when he purposely dropped his hands to taunt his foe.
GEL: A) Come now, you didn’t really think first one was an accident, did you?.
              B) Lissen up; that showboating was gift from Winky to you, to help better understand how easy Shane was second time around.

  • 6) Marco Antonio Barrera (59-4, 41 KOs)

Hits: Rubber match win vs. Erik Morales was sensational and made Barrera champion in third weight class.
Misses: Is hard to completely forget the punishment Manny Pacquiao laid on him a year ago.
GEL: Don’t try forgetting … return meeting with Pac-Man could come about and will be useful in your picking the winner.

Post Script: Anyone have a clue why Danny Boy runs his USA Today top ten rankings under the yesterday eight weight class system, but then recognizes Barrera as now winning belts in three different weight classes?
