QUINTANA HALTS CAMPOS IN SIX

By George Elsasser

The ESPN Tuesday Nite drive-by to Playboy Mansion country spawned as weak an offering as it gets - more a 21st century version of a yesteryear "smoker" than a professional fite card.

The main event featured undefeated Carlos Quintana - a still untested tout of the at times delirious ringside commentator Joe Tessie - paired with 33 year-old Francisco Campos.

It was all Quintana from start to finish … showed quickness while enjoying the southpaw advantage over a willing but confused Campos - a mismatch that opened and closed after stanza six of a walk in the park rout for Carlos the "prospect."

Over rounds one thru three Quintana scored repeatedly with small arms fire that more frustrated and annoyed his hapless prey … then stanza four with Quintana picking up the pace while setting down on his deliveries.

The message became clear to the stranger from Costa Rico that he was in a no-win situation, and wisely opted to retire on his stool during the 60 seconds respite between six and seven.

Quintana now goes to a still undefeated 20 wins with 16 KOs … Campos the victim drops to 19-4-1, 11 questionables.

Post Scripts ~ Carlos Quintana: No longer a rookie at age 28 and twenty outings … think prospect and "contender hopeful" something of a stretch. Is yet to have been tested. The punching power more pugilistic cluster bomb than blockbuster level. Feelings here is the future is today -ala ESPN club fights.
Francisco Campos: All losses to date reportedly suffered during visits to the USA. Home cooked meals is only option if intending to continue the fight career.

"Smokers" ~ The prelims were at best an insult to serious viewers. Them yesteryear hastily drawn boxing shows aboard troop ships, that were referred to as smokers, bested by far what was offered up as professional underneath card.
