It was all Sechew Powell in last noche’s Sho-Box main event offering, as
the smooth and technically sound southpaw breezed by a game veteran in
Robert Frazier over ten rounds of fast-paced action.
It was clear from the opening bell that Powell, a promising
boxer-puncher in style and maturing age 26, had too much of everything
for Frazier who gave it his best at a now 32 and making his 42nd kept
appointment.
Each round pretty much played out to the Powell script - the jab
followed by bursts of three-punch, text book combinations. Try as he
may, the seasoned veteran would attempt answering the incoming with lead
rights and assorted returns of his own.
Major difference between the two junior middleweights was the power
advantage of Powell - helping the cause is he works from the port side -
the straight left gets there quickly and the body barrages help get the
job done - still, Frazier earns a curtain call for a solid chin and
ability to still go the distance when the pace is ongoing.
Powell improves to unblemished 19 wins with 11 by stoppage - Frazier
drops to 31 wins, 7 losses with four draws and 15 wins coming via
knockout.

Semi-final scheduled
eight-round welterweight mismatch saw power punching Andre Berto
dispatching game, but clearly outgunned Jonathon Tubbs at the 2:44 mark
of stanza three when his corner wisely tossed in the towel.
Both youngsters, Berto at age 22 and Tubbs 23, entered with undefeated
resumes` - but that is where the similarity ends - the Berto power
advantage was quickly established against a lighter punching Berto who
works from the port side.
The Berto straight right hand finds the target early in candle two and
down goes Tubbs who beats the count, but later in the round is down from
another Tubbs power right hand.
The end comes in stanza three when the corner tosses the towel in when
seeing its charge making additional trip to the canvas - all this while
incompetent fool of a referee, Jeff Macaluso is readying to give Tubbs
an encore attempt at self-destruction.
Berton goes to 10-0 with 8 by KO, and Tubbs suffers first loss and
dropping to 7-1 - 1, 3 KO’s.

Post Scripts: Sechew
Powell ~ No further need for the physically mature southpaw (age 26 )
with excellent skills, coupled with seemingly good power, to remain at
the Sho-Box, ESPN, HBO After-Dark level. Expect this the year to step
up, albeit carefully, to the next level.
Robert Frazier ~ Body looks ok at a now age 32 -
but the career is an open book. Opponent is the today job description -
can still cop a score now and then if wise in opponent selecting.
Bum hack referee of the night honors goes to
hapless clown Jeff Macaluso - dues should be refunded with suggestion he
take a long walk off a short pier. Actually oblivious to responsibility
- and his went no more than two stanzas and change. The Tubbs kid is
blanked and stamped, after going down twice in rounds two, again in
three, and the idiot "man in charge of the action" is ready to claim
some more air time for himself. Corner belatedly tosses in towel.
