PETER LEFT-HOOK A NIGERIAN NIGHTMARE

By George Elsasser

The Showtime Championship Boxing televised tripleheader from out in the desert of Mandalay Bay Resort country, is one that will be hard to match -  a fistic bill of fare that had something for everyone … and a bit more.

The show opened with heavyweights Samuel Peter facing veteran Jeremy Williams with the club circuit NABF strap on the line ... A trophy that could help place the power punching 24 year young Nigerian in the right direction for better things -  and a Jeremy win would keep the 32 year veteran in biz as well.

Opening bell saw both a tad tentative … still, it carried a mix of nice boxing and the stanza closed with a spirited exchange of power punches - a good sign for the ponderous at 247 pounds Peter, was he handled the couple Jeremy hooks and right hands without as much as an eye blink.

Candle two was young as Williams opted to take the action to the inside … is first off with a combination … then at close quarters tries an awkward looking right uppercut that failed to find a target - then after ducking low to avoid any Peter counter he straightened up. Before Williams could back from punching range he's a target for a monster Peter left hook.

The results saw Jeremy stiffen and fall backwards to the canvas … not a pretty sight. Referee Toby Gibson gets no further than four in the ten count when waving it off.

Time of knockout 24 seconds into stanza two.

NSAC physician during post-fite interview said Williams was unconscious for about a minute … maybe, but the eyes remained closed for more like five minutes from my take.

Peter goes to a still undefeated 21 wins with 18 by kayo … Williams drops to 41-5-1 with 36 knockout wins.

Post Scripts: As expected, the one with the sobriquet "Nigerian Nightmare" asked for Vitali Klitschko come next outing. As impressive as he was last noche, maybe a Jameel McCline, Monte Barrett  would be more logical. But the guy can bang big time with the portside mitt.
Jeremy Williams: The body spoke of plenty gym readiness … maybe a bit bulked, which is fine for bodybuilder photo ops - scored with some power punches that had zero effect on Peter. A now 47 priors and at age 32, and fortunate to have returned to the living after catching a devastating left hook pretty much sums it up.
