The HBO twin-bill from Cancun, Mexico topped its card with
heavyweight Oleg Maskaev defending the WBC strap against challenger Samuel Peter
- and all went as expected, with the power punching Nigerian catching up to the
transplanted Russian at the 2:56 mark of stanza six.
Begins at a proverbial snail’s pace with both behemoths going
the feeling out route - but things would change come stanza three with Maskaev
in trouble courtesy of a Peter right hand bomb.
It had early to bed Oleg written all over it as the big
hitting Peter followed with a barrage of punches that missed the mark as Maskaev
goes “turtle” for survival - and is not only successful, but late in the stanza
it’s Peter on shaky legs.
Then round four and Maskaev out of the shell and showing
confidence - steals the round but stanza five it’s Peter with big right hands -
and a hint of writing on the wall.
Peter then closes the show late in stanza six when a right
hand delivers the message and Oleg backs to the ropes as if in search of a
French white flag of surrender - referee Guadalupe Garcia steps in to call it
no-mas at 2:56 of the round. No argument from the dazed victim.
Post Scripts:
-
Samuel Peter (30-1, 23 KOs) ~ good news - young at 27 with
major league punching power. Bonus is the WBC share of big title brings
recognition of first ever Nigerian heavyweight champion. Bad news is other than
the birth gift of heavy hands, is near bankrupt in skills department. Only
unification will tell rest of the story.
-
Oleg Maskaev (34-6, 26 KOs) ~ age 39 and time to call it a
career. The today splintered titles a blessing that has him in the books as past
heavyweight champion. The now six career knockout debits underline “retired
former champion.”
-
Referee Guadalupe Garcia ~ good stoppage.
-
HBO crew: A) Manny Steward, always good listen. B) Jim
Lampley, motor mouth as usual. C) Max “Newtonian” Kellerman, total loss in Larry
Merchant role of post fight interviews.
