Last nite's ESPN journey touched down at good ol' Mississippi casino town of Philadelphia ... and beamed back a card full o'mismatches.
Opens with featherweight ten-round semi-final ... Rogers Mtagwa, (15-7-2, 17 KO's) and Isidro Tejedor, (16-14-4 with 8 stops) ... you want more? Ok, try Frank Santore in role of feather-brained third man in the ring.
Leather beaten Isidro actually out scores the younger and bigger puncher Mtagwa in rounds one and two ... even with third man in ring Santore on the case about low blows - my notes at the time hinted Tejedor baby would sooner or later be burned on that count.
And sure enough it came earlier ... round four it is first called penalty for hittin' low ... followed a big round three for Mtagwa ... now round five with Tejedor down not once but twice from Mtagwa flurries.
Round six ... Santore baby actually charges a battered Tejedor with still another low-blow point reducer ... gimme a break ... maybe Frankie boy forgot to check if Mtagwa donned a metal cup and leather harness before entering the fray.
Anyway, the mismatch somehow went the distance ... even with Tejedor being dropped again in 8th candle by a nasty left-hook to the body ... unanimous decision for Mtagwa by scores of 96-89 twice and 95-90.
Mtagwa goes to 16-7-2 ... no valid threat to the top guys - Tejedor drops to 16-15-4 and should call it a career. And maybe take this Frank Santore along with him.
Main event outcome no big surprise ... Kassim "The Dream" Ouma halted Carlos Bojoquez on cuts at 35 seconds mark of round eight - but for round two, with "The Dream" taking a cat nap, it was all Ouma with the quicker hands and southpaw style over a slow and aging 31 year old Bojoquez.
Ouma has nice moves but hand speed is key to success ... sort of gatlin' gun or burp gun type ... small caliber output, thus a question mark on how far this kid goes at jr. middle where more than a few bad guys hang out.
The ESPN gang tossed us another peek at Lou Duva find James Kirkland in a gimme of all gimmes ... the undefeated 19 year old southpaw goes to 10 wins and 8 via the KO route ... but check out latest victim Martinus Clay ... enters the pugilistic execution at 7- 4 with 3 stops ... best I can offer is Duva better step up the opposition level while he's still among the living.
Comments: Enjoyed that taped return trip to Gardnerville showing Vic Dracula blowing the call in last week's Brinkley-Perez ... hearing that Vic was distraught over dropping the ball is one thing ... what ESPN experts missed is whole different thing ... Vic not only doesn't see the alleged low blow but makes the call after asking Brinkley whether or not he was hit with foul punch. Teddy expert lightly touched on the inquiring Dracula but missed opportunity to simply state an official must only call what he sees and not what he thought he saw, etc.
