"OLAJIDE IN 4 - TUESDAY NIGHT FIGHTS IS NO MORE"

By George Elsasser

Was a bit passed ten on the time piece that I aimed the remote at the ESPN2 channel ... and the lady pros were still playing bouncy ball - a city school yard version ... good from the foul line and coupled with mucho bumping.

Two 7oz Buds later, it's Tessie and Scottie near tears doin' the bye-bye thing ... is final Tuesday nite show of this year 2003 - I quickly joined them - altho' my leaking lachrymal gland was due more to the joy of hearing the news.

And then the ring action ... er, fast forward to second prelim ... welterweights Jimmy Lange facing Homer Gibbons ... Homer enters at 42-10, 30 KOs ... Lange the "prospect" at 21-1-, 15 KOs.

Lange's fite from start to finish ... tall welter at 6' and younger than the fall guy Gibbins who calls it a night's work at 1:50 seconds of stanza three - was first given standing eight, then down from near-hits on two more occasions ... is still round three when Homer gets religion ... goes to one knee before the tall guy can hit him again.

Brutal, but typical Tuesday nite fare ... for what it's worth, neither guy has a future in this sport of pro boxing.

Main event ... Tokunbo Olajide facing Emil Baku ... need a refresher? ... Tokunbo, a flashy, well schooled jr. middle was on doorstep to good things until a stranger named Epifanio Mendoza come knockin' on the door ... all the way from Barranquilla, Colombia. The rest is history ... Tokunbo is hit with big left-hook and bounces off the canvas while breaking an ankle. But that was a year ago and today is today.

Opponent Baku also a stranger ... from Russia with love ... or something like that .. resume` has him at 22-1, 17 KOs ... don't ask me why, the kid can't fight a lick.

And so it's Olajide out boxing the novice from start to finis ... end comes following round four ... a furious barrage from a suddenly aggressive Olajide that began with big counter right hand uppercut ... Tokunbo baby liked it enuf he tossed it again a couple times before pouring it on the hapless Baku.

Corner stops affair between rounds four and five ... how they ever agreed to Olajide baffles me ... maybe resulted from family spat ... anyway, Olajide is now 2-0 in last two post-Mendoza outings ... catches the eye in style and good punching power ... question mark is big one ... fragile in the chin department.

Post Script: Feelings here over TNF taking hiatus goes this way ... if what they tossed us is intended as usual fare I see no loss ... and maybe it will improve the FNF offerings.
