A quick glimpse of the upcoming November fistic calendar hints of mixed bag of promise and humor for us faithful followers of the sweet science.

NOVEMBER 3: On the other side of the pond at Cardiff, Wales - it’s Calzaghe - Kessler in super middleweight unification filled with promise - same date on this side of the water is Juan Manuel Marquez and Rocky Juarez for the WBC featherweight trophy.
Both pairings on paper suggest more guarantee than promise - Calzaghe unbeaten at 43 wins with 32 by KO - most recent scores over Peter Manfredy, Sakio Bika, Jeff Lacy, Evans Ashira.
Kessler also untarnished at 39 wins with 29 coming via stoppage - last four scalps taken wore surnames Andrade, Beyer, Lucas, Mundine.

Expectations: Tough call, but smell an upset - the more celebrated Calzaghe at a now age 35 - aggressive style while flailing from the port side - a good target for the younger (28) Kessler with size at 6-1 and text book disciplined. Kessler by decision, but could end via late stanza TKO.
……………………………….........

Marquez - Juarez on paper a dandy of a fire fight. Marquez a certified special one at 126. Juarez earned earlier recognition in two career defining losses to Mexican idol Marcos Antonio Barrera.

Expectations: Marquez by unanimous decision - too complete for a game and quality Juarez who will be shooting for the cheap seats from start to finish.
Food for thought: Marquez (47-3-1, 35KO) age 34, entering fight number 52 of sparkling career. Juarez ( 27-3, 19 KO) age 27 with all debits by decision Barrera (2) and to Humberto Soto.

NOVEMBER 10: USMC birthday 232 - a Semper Fi from MSG -

WBA welter champion Miguel Cotto defending against yesteryear champion Shane Mosley in main event, and Joel Casamayor meeting Jose Santa Cruz in co-feature.

Expectations: Cotto-Mosley a natural action affair. Should see Cotto (30-0, 25 KO) at the controls once the early stanzas Mosley (44-4, 37 KO) resistance slows.
Cotto age 26 at prime time and improving in technique at each outing- Mosley’s best today in rear view mirror of a sterling career.

……………………………….........

Casamayor (34-3-1, 21 KO) at age 36 no longer the force he once was - still, them three debits arrived in losses to Corrales, Jose Luis Castillo, Acelino Freitas. Toss in the port side edge as a bonus and the pick here is the Cuban veteran. Asterisks to the Santa Cruz (25-2, 14 KO) resumé is them debits to David Diaz and Fernando Trejo. Should go to the judges.

………………………….............................................................................................

NOVEMBER 17 - WBO super-featherweight title
Joan Guzman (27-0, 17 KOs) vs. Humberto Soto (43-5-2, 27 KOs) - win, lose, draw, Humberto Soto always has the puncher’s chance.

Expectations: Haven’t seen Guzman in action - but unbeaten male fighter with name Joan says he’ll be no pushover. Age 31 Dominican now calling Brooklyn, USA home. Soto younger at age 27 - but Tijuana tough with 50 kept appointments balances the age factor. Guess is Joan over Humberto by decision.

………………………………................................................................................................

NOVEMBER 23 - this one the promised laugher - Pay Per View? Whew, whew, whew and a ho, ho, ho.
Mayorga - Fernando Vargas the feature attraction with Kermit Cintron- Jesse Feliciano for Cintron’s IBF strap.

The Cintron (28-1, 26 KOs) gimme with challenger Feliciano (15-5-3, 9 KO) is as insulting as it gets. Cintron bigger, stronger, and if not all that a stylist, he’s armed with legit punching power. Translation a stacked deck. Feliciano has had three consecutive losses to Oscar Diaz, Mike Arnaoutis, Mohamad Abdullaev on resumé along with stoppage courtesy of Demetrius Hopkins.

……………………………….........

Mayorga-Vargas holds as much interest here as a hypothetical Valuev in with a Eric Butterbean.
Mayorga (28-6-1, 23 KO) - age 34 - the best years were at welterweight - one fight in 2006 TKO loss to Oscar Golden Boy - one fight in 2005 wins decision over Piccirillo - and year 2004 saw TKO loss to Tito Trinidad.
Vargas (26-4, 22 KO) - age 29 - enters coming off year 2006 TKO losses to Shane Mosley - other two debits courtesy of Hoya and Trinidad. So much for PPV.

P.S.  Memorable Vargas quote: “At the end of the day I’m the captain of my ship” - Titanic maybe?
