Monty Meza-Clay
The ESPN FNF offering
delivered a dandy featherweight duel out at Pittsburgh suburb of
Monroeville, Pennsylvania, in a career must win affair with past
champion Eric Aiken and Monte-Clay in the main event.
Meza-Clay, a 5’ 2” dynamo with
the sobriquet “2-Guns,” lived up to the handle with a constant
round by round barrage that evoked memories of past champions
Jake LaMotta, Henry Armstrong, Beau Jack who once
performed in similar style.
From the opening bell it was
all Meza-Clay in a bob-n-weave two-fisted assault that on this
night the veteran Aiken had no answers to the puzzle - finally
stanza seven, Meza-Clay with a furious barrage backs Aiken
to the ropes - a 14 punch unanswered bombardment would set the
stage.
Aiken managed a single right
hand counter that interrupted the onslaught to no avail -
quickly, it was another barrage of seven more punches finding
the target before referee Shariff jumped in to halt the carnage.
The time 39 seconds of the stanza.
With this impressive outing
Meza-Clay who had entered #8 on the WBO charts is expected to
move up a notch or two - it was that kind of performance.
The ringside commentary
questioned the shortage of answers from the veteran Aiken - was
said he should have used a strong jab and outside counter style
- problem on this night was clearly: A) Aiken entered with mixed
results of win-losses in last five outings; B) for reasons only
Aiken knows, on this night he simply could not get off.
Post Scripts: Meza-Clay (21-1,
18 KOs) ~ age 26 - single loss at hands of durable and bigger in
size and weight Edner Cherry - at feather proved too much for
Aiken. The style is one of crowd pleaser with decent but not
explosive punching power. Expect he’ll now move closer to the
title contention pack - smart move is WBO champion Steve Luevano.
At 126 Chris John is the man … Guerrero has date with Jason
Litzau for his share.
Eric Aiken
(16-7-1, 12 KOs) ~ age 27 but fought as if older. Needs a rest
and a gimme before resuming serious business. Has the style but
could not get untracked.
Referee
Shariff ~ Good night's work - even with the first barrage no
sign Aiken was in serious trouble - but when second onslaught
found target he quickly called it off.
