Last nite’s Telefutura card from Arcadia, FL spawned a mixed
collection of mismatches - feature attraction saw Juan
Mercedes all over a no threat Marino Montiel of 18-10-1, 8
infamy.
Mercedes, a transplanted Dominican now calling San Juan, Puerto Rico
home, had little trouble claiming IBF Latino s/flyweight
strap following 12 rounds of repetitious one sided rounds.
The shorter, physically stronger Mercer, the far better in
all departments, mixed the offense with assorted
combinations that went body to head - and to his credit,
held to the blueprint even after a docking for low blow
infraction in round five.
Several Montiel trips to the canvas from alleged violations
looked more a shout for help from hackster in charge Robert
Schwartz than anything ominous- and how the kid with the
smudged rap sheet qualified for this outing is a mystery.
Best I had on my unofficial for the decision losing Montiel
was a 9-9 stanza five courtesy of the point deduction -
translation Mercedes via unanimous decision on all cards
118-108 - and my tally had it Mercedes 119-108 in points and
11-1 under round by round scoring.
Post Scripts: Juan Mercedes (18-1, 12) ~ age 25 - jury not
as yet sequestered - a must is stepping up the next rung to
get rest of the story. Montiel shortage of clout made for an
easy walk in the park.
Marino Montiel (18-11-1, 8 ) ~ nice
enough technique - until body contact. Cheated at birth with
punching power, nice movement won’t get it done.
Ref. Robert Schwartz ~ a cold shower
prior to ring entrance would be of no help - tank town hack
without a clue.

Scheduled six round featherweight prelim saw age 21
undefeated Argenis Mendez going to 6-0 with 5 by knockout
via impressive round two knockout of Daniel Lorenzana who
drops to 2-2, 1.
Mendez dropped a game but outgunned Lorenzana in opening
stanza courtesy of a left hook - then round two it’s left
hook to the body for a knockdown that was quickly followed
by body hook that saw referee giving it the full count.
The 5 foot 10 Mendez has decent technique to go with the
power and young enough to develop into future force at the
always challenging feather-s/feather-bantamweight levels.
