Marquez batters bloodied Juarez
 by George Elsasser

The Saturday Showtime S/featherweight WBC battle with defending champion Juan Manuel Marquez facing quality challenger Rocky Juarez looked on paper a dandy affair.

Then during opening round action one of them inadvertent meeting of the minds - with Juarez severely cut over the left eye - and what eventually would translate to   disgrace to the game - courtesy of assorted sanctioned individuals.

The fight itself was a fan friendly natural - Marquez a proven veteran and complete package at age 34 - resume` glitters at 47-3-1, 35 KO’s - and the challenger Juarez at age 27, never pampered with win-loss rap sheet 27-3, 19 KO’s.

Then the cut - evil in sight and bad enough to see Juarez working round after round with red painted face from the flowing cut eye that would never once become controlled by the corner cut man.

Early on we see commission hack medicine man visiting the Juarez corner and informing house idiot in charge referee “Bobby” - and ain’t that a cute name for a senior citizen- Ferrara to let the carnage continue.

Marquez quickly targets the wounded orbit, and to interested observers among the paying clientele at ringside, a taken vote would have been a resounding no-mas!

But not the case with the medicine man, referee, and for shame the alleged Juarez brain trust - from manager, cut man, to alleged trainer - more qualified as cheerleader turned trainer Ronnie Shields, could see a lost cause staring them in the face.

The numbers speak for itself - Marquez unanimous 120-108, 118-110, 117-111 - my unofficial equally one-sided for Marquez at 119-109 and 11-1 in rounds.

Best I can add to the travesty is an opinion: shame on the Commission ambulance chaser, “Bobby” referee wannabe and the Juarez corner collection - all of the above in need of a brain scan.

Post Scripts: Juan M Marquez (48-3-1, 35 KO) ~ text book in skills - creativity the bonus - looking for return with Manny Pacquiao - that one a natural with Marquez either even money or live underdog at worst.
Rocky Juarez (27-4, 19 KO) ~ age 27 - at prime time and has all the qualities of yesterday good ones. Willing to die with his boots on - says here young enough and good enough, to snatch one of them available out there before  the well runs dry. Could use a change in brain trust.

Post scripts: Reported comments from assorted hacks - Referee “Bobby” repeated visits to Juarez corner as the red fluid leaked “Do you want to continue?” Commission medicine man - “Can you see out of the eye?” Corner cheerleader Ronnie Shields “ You’re behind (fightin’ blind better description) you gotta let it all out - you need the knockout.”

I mean. like, maybe shoutin’ no-mas, and then applauding a valiant fighter while telling him tomorrow is another day would be the thing to do.

Prelim IBF feather title fight saw young age 24 Robert Guerrero going to 21-1, 14 KO’s with opening round 56 seconds stoppage of challenging Martin Honorio who dropped to 24-4-1, 12 KO’s.

Closing thoughts: this one came to us from Tucson, AZ … a stone’s throw from California country - immediate reaction was the recalling of journalist and political leader Horace Greeley (circa 1811-1872) - once shouted “Go West young man” - and I wonder how many lives the hack cost with that slogan during the California Gold rush of 1849.
