The Telefutura Friday the 13th  visit to fort Worth, TX coughed up a middleweight mismatch as David Lopez of 35-12, 24 KO’s mediocrity,  romped to a unanimous decision win over Michael Walker who arrived with undefeated résumé glowing at 18-0-2, 12 KO’s.

The opening bell shows Lopez the taller at 6‘2” vs. 5’7” and having the better while working from the port side - not to mention the busier while displaying quicker hands over a slower in all departments Walker.

Stanza two with good 2-way exchanges - edge Lopez - then it’s Walker grabbing candle three with the action on the inside - clearly the place the visiting “Midnight Stalker” needed to be to have success on this night.

Numero cuatro a sloppy one, with Walker having the better - the busier of the two in a mauling, holding-hitting stanza - but then round five and we see Walker huffing and puffing like engine number 49.

A slowed Walker would then give working room to Lopez over stanzas six through nine who used the outside to set up a mix of combinations and flurries - and other than a final round ten it was all the man from Sonora, Mexico with the advantage.

Scoring went unanimous Lopez 98-92 on all cards - my unofficial agreed -had it Lopez 97-93 and in rounds 7-3.

Rest of the story:

  • David Lopez ~ age 30 - has good size at 6’2” but a dozen debits on the rap sheet a strong indication the future was yesterday.

  • Michael Walker ~ age 29 - enters undefeated with 2 draws and 12 wins by knockout - never once showed the needed pressure to bring the much bigger Lopez down to size in convincing style. Lack of fuel once at midway point of round five shouts lack of conditioning.

  • Referee Laurence Cole ~ house daddy-connected Laurence spent the entire ten stanzas yanking at Walker’s arms, gloves while cautioning the Chicago fighter of holding.
