Jhonny Gonzalez

The Telefutura Friday noche Solo-Boxeo attraction from Cicero, Illinois delivered middleweights David Lopez and David Toribio in the feature attraction, and past Bantam champion Jhonny Gonzalez paired with Jose Angel Beranza in the s/bantam co-feature.

Show opens with Gonzalez having all the advantages of height and reach - and once shedding the Penalosa by KO hangover in last outing he would take control in this one with Beranza.

The taller Gonzalez at 5’7” to 5’4” Penalosa, made for a tough night for the age 31 veteran of 40 priors with 10 setbacks on the rap sheet. The double-left hook combo was scoring time and again - even if costing Gonzalez a point deduction in round ten for touching down a hair below the belt line.

Scoring went unanimous Gonzalez 98-91, 98-91, 96-93 - my unofficial agreed Gonzalez 98-92 in points and 7-1, 2 even using round system.

Post Scripts: Gonzalez (35-6, 29KO) ~ age 27 but the glory days of bantamweight champion is now gone with the wind. No longer a valid title threat at super bantam level - bad risk if sharing ring with the Israel Vazquez, Caballero, Ponce De Leon, Molitor crowd of titleholders.
Beranza (30-11, 25 KO) ~ age 31 and gives up too much to mingle with top level candidates. Game club fighter but very limited.
Referee Celestinos Ruiz - new face on the block - was going fine and dandy until the superfluous final round Gonzalez debit in lopsided affair.
………………………………................................................................................

The middleweight main event was pretty much pre-destined - take a pick - Lopez enters 32-12, 23 KOs but on 8-bout win streak. Late sub Toribio of 14-9, 8 KOs arrives having lost eight of ten most recent priors.

Round one a slow one with southpaw Lopez having the edge in feeling out stanza - picks up the pace in good round two - then number three and enter hack in charge when on home turf, Geno Rodriguez with caution to Lopez for low blow.
Continues all Lopez over four rounds before Rodriguez deducts a point for low blow in stanza five - no matter, still a blanking as the stanza goes 9-9, and Lopez up 4-0 with one even on this unofficial.

Continues a proverbial whitewash down to the final bell with all jurors voting Lopez 99-90 - my unofficial scandal sheet agrees Lopez 99-90 in points and 9-0 with one even using round by round method.

Post Scripts: David Lopez (33-12, 23) ~ age 29 - a southpaw without punching power - but if stepping up to a Kassim Ouma, Winky Wright port side version it would not be Lopez wearing the “puncher” moniker.
Had piece of cake last noche with Toribio in it for pay check.
David Toribio (14-10, 8) ~ age 27 without a future - takes fight on three day notice and it showed.

Closing comments: The pre-fight promo propaganda touted David Toribio a step up in talent to original Lopez opponent Daryl Salmon that had called in sick three days before the ring appointment. Would have arrived on 2-bout losing streak.
Referee Geno Rodriguez ~ seems this chump is being rewarded for the Colombia colossal example of incompetence when working the Kendal Holt fight - and not noticing the incoming beer that should have seen him immediately aborting the fight.
