This Saturday Showtime special has portside power punching Joe Calzaghe
and Jeff "Left Hook" Lacy in a IBF/WBO unifier - and unlike recent
rehashed "names"- this one needs zero window dressing or the usual hype.
Both are unbeaten super-middleweights - both bring the kind of clout
that will pack the joint on merit alone - Calzaghe still a young body at
age 33, with 31 of his 40 wins coming by knockout - and Lacy, at prime
time age 28, has made 21 trips to the well, and taken 17 scalps.
Have never seen a Calzaghe fight - highlight clip here and there is all
- not all that polished or fluid in style - lacks the proverbial
southpaw edge, but does let the leather fly. Taller at 5-11 to Lacy at
5-9 but feel he will be available at some point in time.
Expectations here is the ever improving Lacy should get the job done …
early or late - very convincing body punching did it with a decent
Robin Reid - should be a repeat with Calzaghe.
Either way, the fare is palatable - as in pleaser - while hyped upcoming
PPV teasers Mayweather-Judah in April, and Hoya-Mayorga in May, has me
regurgitating over the very thought.
