Not too surprising that former lightweight title shareholder Julio Diaz would rise to the occasion, after eight months on the shelf following TKO loss to Juan Diaz in unification mismatch.

I mean, this one held at the Hugh Hefner mansion at Beverley Hills, CA, the ideal setting for both, young and perverted in attendance - age 28 Diaz, was quickly up for the task facing age 30, David Torres, a no-name undefeated novice in skills.

Took no more than a blink after the opening stanza bell to see Torres was brought in as more target than tester for the #6 ranked IBF lightweight - late in round three we see Torres reeling in reverse - referee Tony Crebs sees it a “technical” knockdown - the logic conveyed by ringside commentator Joe Tessitore was Crebs thinking were there no ring ropes, Torres would have been seated among the ringside celebrities in attendance.

Then stanza four and Torres coming apart at the proverbial seams - bloody and puffy and clearly aware he was in over his head - then numero cinco and in serious trouble the house medic is called in for evaluation - waves it off - time of TKO 1:25 of stanza five.

Post Scripts:

  • Julio Diaz (35-4, 26 KO) ~ age 28 - young enough to successfully work the club fight scene - but says here road kill if facing best at s/feather, lightweight. Jr. welter.

  • David Torres ( 20-1, 13 KO) ~ age 30 - undefeated entering - first debit leaving. Maybe Hefner recommended - we’re talking sub-novice amateur in skills department. Offerings delivered via Western Union with nothing of value attached. The pairings from start to finis made to order for Playboy gals in attendance.

  • ………………………………................................................................................................

Co-feature a middleweight battle with Henry Buchanan showing the better skills than tough and willing Brian Norman - early on Norman looked to have puncher’s chance - but it would be all Buchanan once it reached the halfway mark of stanza five.

Come six, it was all Buchanan in a systematic breaking down of the game Norman - variety of combinations enforced with more efficient fuel tank, it would come as no surprise something dramatic would be in the offering.

Stanza nine the in command Buchanan surprises his prey with a power left hook to the body - then ala Berto vs. Rodriguez a week ago - a big right uppercut on the bulls-eye - then a second right hand as Norman was falling - TKO 1:02 of the round.

Post Scripts:

  • Henry Buchanan (17-1, 12 KO) ~ age 29 - shows good skills in movement, feinting departments. Lapses at times while thinking offense - becomes target that may slow future progress. Good at club fight level. Rest of story unwritten.

  • Brian Norman (16-8, 4 KO) ~ age 29 - off this outing appears more journeyman than prospect.
