KHALID JONES - DARNELL WILLIAMS BATTLE TO A STANDOFF By George Elsasser |
![]() |

Khalid Jones (L) - Darnell Williams (R)
George Khalid Jones and Darnell Williams met in
last noche’s ESPN TNF's main event from suburban Glen Burnie, Maryland … and
when the smoke cleared following a very interesting light heavy affair it was
scored a standoff.

Considering what we got was a distinct contrast in styles, Jones a southpaw with
decent movement, Williams, awkward and clumsy albeit always in forward gear, it
was no surprise it would result in a beauty in eyes of the beholder call.
Thus, it went Jones 96-94, Williams 96-95, 95-95 ... my unofficial had it Jones
96-94 in points and 6-4 in rounds - altho’ I feel it easily could have been
Jones by wider margin.
Was Jones over stanzas 1-2-3 by virtue of accurate counter right hooks and
straight left hands while Williams was slow in pursuit … finally the bigger
puncher called "Ding-A-Ling" snatches candle four with some heavy duty
roundhouse punches finding the mark.
Jones pretty much cruised over five thru seven before the heavier puncher had
himself a big number eight and then continued competitive during the final three
candles.
Jones is now 19-2-1, 13 by KO. Williams 16-1-3, 14 by KO.
Post Scripts: Jones ~ Decent skills, good chin, a young age 37, but slowed
during the run to the wire. Not the hitter the resume` reflects but a good test
for new faces at light heavy.
Williams ~ Big and physically strong in appearance, every
punch from either side carries a 'Hail Mary' tag. The better ones at 175 should
have little problem solving this guy called "Ding-A-Ling." Much too bulked up to
get off anything resembling a combination … enough said.
Junior middleweight eight rounder saw undefeated Ishmail Arvin tossing a shutout
in a one-sided affair with Elco Garcia. No knockdowns although Arvin did score
effectively with left-hook to the body.
Garcia at age 33 and inactive looked as rusty as the WW2 Japanese Navy now in
dry dock since year 1945, and Arvin not as impressive as the undefeated 11-0-1,
6 KO’s may indicate.
A four-round meeting of two guys named Taylor resulted in another mismatch with
Maxell 'The General' Taylor blanking Clarence 'Sonny Bono' Taylor with all
precincts reporting for Taylor 40-36, 40-36, 40-36 … Maxell the 19 year-old over
Clarence the 32 year-old.
Finally: Best news here is in reporting that all three referees - Malik Waleed,
Kenny Chevalier, Bill Holmes - had themselves a superb night of officiating.
Simply showed up to do a job - not a hot dog among them.
