Javier Jauregui
Over twelve stanzas of scoring judges soul searching, it was
Javier Jauregui claiming the NABF lightweight strap via unanimous decision over
Miguel Huertas to the tune of 115-112 twice and 117-110.
My unofficial had it for Huerta 115-112 in points and 7-5
under the round by round method - regardless, for the age 34 seasoned veteran
Jauregui who once claimed the IBF bauble over Leavander Johnson back in 2003,
after this latest number 69 kept appointment his future is in the rear view
mirror.
Huerta, age 29 at 26-9-1, 18 KO’s ~ the NABF minor league
trinket would have been a nice trophy had he gotten the win - flip side likely
would have moved him into unfamiliar territory with the 135 pound elite.
Both fighters answered the opening bell in classic club
fighter style as they battled at close quarters - Huertas seemed to have the
edge over the early rounds with a busier output - turns southpaw in round four
with good results - but Jauregui showed he was in it for the long haul.
Round five the Guadalajara veteran surprises with good
outside skills - counter left hooks and sneak right hand leads catch the eye -
and with it, a styles make fights scenario would entertain the Telefutura TV
viewers, and live Cicero, Illinois crowd in attendance to the final bell.
Single blemish of the night would have no bearing on the
outcome - referee Curtis Thrasher - an Amish look-a-like with hanging red beard,
charges the winner Jauregui a point for what he perceived a knockdown in stanza
ten - right, wrong, or otherwise, the timing was terrible in what appeared a
cliffhanger up for grabs.
Televised replays show Huerta scoring with left hand at close
quarters, and quickly shoving his opponent to get follow up room - the move
tripped up Jauregui who took a seat on the canvas but was quickly on his feet
and ready to résumé.
Post Scripts:
-
Jauregui (53-14-2, 36 KO) ~ age 34 - DOB coupled with 69 kept
appointments translates to the old rocking chair. On paper he fools Father Time
- showed hints of yesterday skills, but against more serious opponents, a last
noche loss would have been blessing in disguise.
-
Huertas (26-9, 18 KO) ~ age 29-30 depending on the bio -
likable and unafraid in style. Problem is lack of major league punching power -
entertaining at small venues cannot cut it when moving up a rung.
-
Thrasher the referee - Cicero, Illinois for life.
………………………………................................................................................................
Televised card opens with undefeated Brandon Rios (15-0, 10
KOs) age 21 in with age 38 Alvin Brown at a now 26-11-1, 12 KOs infamy -
handwriting quickly on the proverbial wall in opening candle - all Rios with
scoring right hands to the head and left-hooks punishing the body.
The scribbling notes shouted this one does not go deep water
- the early power body hooks underlined the rest of the story - then stanza two
and Brown down from right hand to the head - cannot beat the count.
Time of knockout 1:10 of numero two - Rios could grow to
prospect but jury still out until sharing the squared circle with more serious
opposition.
Brown arrives for this one on 2-bout knockout losses. Enough
said.
