Showtime Saturday Sho-Box "The New Generation"
thought it had itself something special in previously undefeated John
Molina who entered the lightweight showdown for NABF; NABO straps with
veteran Jr. Lightweight Martin Honorio.
Not to be - not by a long shot - as the smaller
Honorio of Bell, California via Mexico City quickly schooled the bigger
punching Molina of Covina, California, who displayed a power right hand
and strong chin, but little else over ten lopsided stanzas that favored
Honorio to the unanimous tune of 99-91; 98-92; 98-92.
The post fight comments differed not on the outcome,
but on the weight a return would be contested at - Molina camp wants it
at 135 - Honorio insists it must be at jr. lightweight. Much work ahead
for the respective brain trusts if a return can be made.
Post Scripts: Martin Honorio (27-4-1, 14 KOs) ~ age
29 - not hard to notice the veteran is well schooled - outclassed the
one-dimensional opponent in all departments but right hand power. Aware
he was far ahead on points entering stanza nine he takes the foot off
the gas pedal over the final two rounds.
John Molina (18-1, 14 KOs) ~ age 27 - too much early
success created an illusion the kid was ready for a proven complete
entity as Honorio. The Goossen gang likely convinced size and punching
power would be enough for the tough Molina to get the job done. Latest
word is Molina fought sick - but didn't want to pull the plug on the big
opportunity. To that, only the devil knows. The kid could still develop
in a tough lightweight loaded division at the upper level. But only if
he drops the banzai approach and is able to upgrade the overall
technique.
Sho-Box trio of Bob Papa, Maxie boy Kellerman, Lennox
Lewis more qualified as slapstick trio ala "Moe-Larry-Curly" than doing
boxing commentary. The old axiom three's a crowd all too visible with
Bob-Max-Lennox.
