The ESPN FNF offering from Lincoln, Rhode Island, a
cruiserweight pairing with good intentions of showcasing latest
undefeated at 17-0-1, 12 KOs “house” hopeful Aaron “Awesome”
Williams, in with Colombian Jose Luis Herrera arriving at 15-4,
15 KOs stat sheet.
The key to this pairing was in the rest of the story - as in
Herrera claiming 15 scalps via knockout while also being
starched in three of them four losses - toss in the celebrated
power puncher Williams and expectations were high from top to
bottom.
The taped pre-fight interview qualified for a Mike Tyson
“ludicrous” attachment - had the 22 year youngster Williams
telling the viewers he wanted to be remembered as something of
a past great come retirement days.
Curtain opens and bingo! - Herrera down and all going as
scripted - and being noticed by Teddy nice guy - opens the door
for a shooting from the hip questioning of how the commission
could sanction a guy (Herrera) coming in on four consecutive
losses with 3 via knockout.
Ok, I thought … my thinking as well - but somewhere in the back
roads of my battered recycle bin was them fifteen KO’s Herrera
had managed back home in Colombia - had they all been bogus?
Still, Atlas continues sharing all them positives Williams was
displaying - and how they were overcoming some careless actions
that a lesser natural talent could not get away with.
Bravo Teddy - and then a surviving Herrera shows up for stanza
cinco - and with the “awesome” hot prospect Williams on the
offense - and with a few careless actions, he leaves the
“chinny-chin-chin” unprotected - Bingo! - a picture perfect
Herrera counter right hand and down he goes.
Williams manages to beat the count - but not looking very well
- more like out on his feet. Instinct is to retreat … then a
second thought sees him take the proverbial “knee” - and we
hear Atlas shout of “Good move“ - my thoughts at the time was
more “Good grief.”
Medicine man quickly enters ring and after brief gab fest calls
it off at 1:58 seconds of round - and where was the third man
in charge Charlie Dwyer you ask? Maybe out to lunch.
Post scripts:
- Aaron Williams (17-1-1, 12 KOs) ~ age 22 - good size and
can punch. Needs work on basics - chin may not be imported
since the surprise counter right from Herrera was picture
perfect. Not impressed with the “taking a
- J. L. Herrera (16-4, 16 KOs) ~ age 28 - what you see is
what you get - not the best chin as hinted in resumé -
shortage of skills in technique department thus the three
debits by KO. No questioning the heart of a fighter. Earned a
curtsy.
Studio segment: Think it time someone sits down with Brian
“No Clue” Kenny. Guest host Timothy Bradley, just short of two
weeks ago the kid removes Super Lightweight crown from
defending champion Junior Witter and he’s hearing “No Clue”
tell him he’s a prospect but not real champ - ala Ring Magazine
champion.
Feelings here is if we cannot do any better than a Ring
magazine belt, it’s best we leave all as it is.
Further, think it time Bert Saccharine segment is fine tuned,
or have him saddle up and ride off into the sunset.
