--Victor
"Vitino" Fonseca stopped Al Seeger--
Last night Showtime “New Generation” dished up a mixed bag
of Triple A mediocrity from far out Laredo, Texas, that saw Victor Fonseca
come alive over the championship rounds of eight and nine to stop Al Seeger at
1:41 stanza nine - and Freddy Hernandez following with a walk in the park,
unanimous decision win over Damian Frias in the main event.
The show opens with s/bantams Seeger and Fonseca battling
for the NABF, NABO straps - Seeger operating from the orthodox side and
Fonseca the port side.
Fonseca clearly the physically stronger of the two, in
technique, strayed from the Queensbury rules while incorporating some of both,
yesteryear featherweight champ Sandy Saddler, and lightweight belt holder
Paddy De Marco.
To be more specific, Fonseca would wear down Seeger with
help from on and off head butting ala De Marco, and Saddler holding behind the
head while flailing away with the inside left-hook.
Seeger showed heart while battling with cuts under both
eyes and the nose - to the extent official scoring after eight stanzas had it
Seeger up 79-73, 77-75 - 76-76. My unofficial saw it Fonseca 77-75.
Then numero nine, and Fonseca follows a volley of head
punches with a big left hand, that drops Seeger along the ropes - referee
Ruben Carrion quickly sounds taps on the fallen Georgian.
Rest of the story:
Victor Fonseca (17-0, 9 KO) ~ age 28 southpaw. In
style the port-starboard advantage not there - is strictly “Katy bar the door”
while running on a full tank. Not a serious threat to the upper echelon at
s/bantam. Entertaining club fighter.
Al Seeger (28-5, 22 KO) ~ age 29 - have no clue where
them 22 scalps have been taken - while showing decent jab and straight right
hand combo, lacks the clout to earn needed respect. On my card he grabs rounds
six and seven while Fonseca takes pit stop to refuel. Says here, while
entertaining among the minor league clientele, neither Fonseca or Seeger
qualify to dance with the Vasquez, Marquez, Caballero, Juanma Lopez
hit-men.
Referee Rubin Carrion - the cautions to Fonseca over clash of head violations
and hold & hitting had zero impact on the Puerto Rican street fighter. Good
news he wasted no time calling it no-mas when the battered/bloody Seeger fell
to the canvas halfway into number nine.
....................................................................................
Welterweights Freddy Hernandez and Damian Frias followed in a meeting for the
WBC Latino belt with Hernandez the quicker out of the gate with good body
punching.
I give Frias the edge in stanza two as he picks up the pace
but then fails to claim another round until final candle number ten when he
finally put together a serious albeit brief barrage that rocked Hernandez. Too
little too late.
Scoring went unanimous Hernandez 98-92 on all cards - my
unofficial made it a 98-92 four bagger.
Closing Comments: Freddy Hernandez ( 26-1, 18 KO) ~ Age 30
- the Lynwood, Calif. via Mexico City veteran is comfortable where he’s at the
Triple A level. Showed decent body punching when on the inside but hangs
around too long in the kitchen and against more aggressive opponent makes
target for incoming mail. Guess here is not a prayer among a field of 147 with
names Mosley, Cotto, Pacquiao, Clottey, Berto etc.
Damian Frias (16-2, KO7) ~ Age 33 - the Miami
-via Cuba- southpaw never gave a full court press a chance until number nine -
the late wake-up call hinted he may have got the job done had he been
aggressive from the start. He too is a certified minor league talent.
Referee Rafael Ramos - too much showboating as he danced
and pranced about with off the cuff commands.
