Could be a coin flip decision on which route to go this
coming Saturday night - HBO serves up a main event with
WBC/WBO middleweight champ Jermain Taylor in with young
hopeful Kelly Pavlik - Showtime counters with WBC l/heavy
champion Chad Dawson in its feature attraction with late sub
Epifanio Mendoza in role of fall guy.
Tough decision on which to give top priority for the fan
unable to go the VCR route.
On that note, let’s assist with the choice making; What
about this Jermain Taylor - Kelly Pavlik pairing - media and
internet sites alike see the age 25 Pavlik a valid challenge
to the undefeated champion.
Personally I’m not all that convinced the Youngstown kid is
ready to pull the proverbial rabbit out of the hat.
Puncher’s chance one may argue, maybe, maybe not, since we
haven’t as yet seen any cracks in the chin construction of
Taylor in some 28 unbeaten outings.
Pavlik also arrives undefeated after 31 kept appointments
with 28 short of distance - expectations are he’ll come to
fight - showed valid toughness in the Edison Miranda win
that earned him top media rating recognition.
Rest of the story: Tale of the tape one thing, but Taylor
has proven himself with better quality of opposition - the
win-draw with Bernard Hopkins, and the Winky Wright, Ouma,
Spinks outings top the "names" that’s on the Pavlik resumé.
Guess here is Pavlik makes it interesting early, but the
quickness and polish difference favors the champion - pick
here is Taylor via unanimous decision - that is, unless
Kelly turns up a bleeder - then it’s late stanza TKO.
The Showtime feature more a gimme than a contest with young
age 25, tall at 6-3 and working from the port side Chad
Dawson heavy favorite over replacement Mendoza, who’s resumé
has him arriving on four bout winning streak - closer peek
shows scalps taken have collective 32 wins, 51 losses with 4
draws.
The original Dawson challenger dropped out - masked man
Adrian Diaconu, WBO number four rated, copped a plea that
opened the door for a Mendoza stipend.
The overall choice goes to HBO - underneath Taylor-Pavlik is
welters Andre Berto ( 19-0, 16 KOs) and David Estrada (21-3,
12 KOs) for the NABF minor league strap.
Berto age 24 a valid puncher from both sides - maybe being
rushed a bit but Estrada a good selection for a better
reading on where the kid is at.
Estrada riding a 3 bout winning streak over non-entities -
more telling the three debits on the resumé came when
stepping up in talent - Kermit Cintron via TKO, and
decision loss to Shane Mosley - earlier loss Ishe Smith.
Pick here is Berto via stoppage of a very hittable Estrada.
Finally, Showtime co-feature gifts us with IBF bantam title
fight with defending champion Luis Perez (25-1, 16KO)
against Joseph Agbeko (24-1, 21KO).
On paper a quality pairing and expectations of a barnburner
when the little guys wage war - closer peek sees challenger
Agbeko ranked among IBF at number 15.
So much for rest of the story - it's Perez the Nicaraguan
port side bomber by stoppage somewhere along the way in what
appears more showcase than valid title threat.
HBO as well gets the nod over Showtime if and when these
respective battles conflict for the viewer attention -
Berto-Estrada likely the show stealer with Taylor-Pavlik
placing second and with luck Perez-Agbeko finishes in show
position - Dawson- Mendoza clearly a no brainer for the
classy "Bad Chad."
